Steve
I'm not an expert but that sounds fine - the key point is the charcoal vapor filters.

https://auto-paint.co.uk

I use these guys for all my paint supplies, they can supply aerosols colour matched, as well as laquers, basecoats etc.
One suggestion, don't use a cheapo gun, it will not give a decent finish, you can get a quality DeVilbiss SLG or FLG at a reasonable price.

The main problem if doing rust repairs will be getting a satisfactory colour match, you really need to blend in the new paint which can be difficult, especially if you've never done it before.

Another solution maybe to find your local auto paint supplier and ask if they can mix paint to a sample...

Copy that - when I first started painting at home some 30+ years ago I first started with a spray gun that came in a kit of air tools. The fan was uneven and it was difficult with solid paint and impossible with metallic - I wasted hundreds on paint. I then bought a second hand DeVilbiss JGA557 and rebuilt it and never looked back - much smoother, quicker, easier and more controllable. No idea about the current DeVilbiss reange but you won't go far wrong with them.

Annd....... Any spray gun, no matter how good the quality needs to be thoroughly cleaned and cleaned again after use.

Thanks again for all the input, really helpful.

Tried 2 local auto pant supplies companies local to me, one I could get hold of was not interested in non trade / DIY business, other one I'll try again tomorrow.

If no luck then I'll try the online option suggested.

Really good points about cheapo guns, and in particular cleaning out.

Certanly heard of DeVilbiss, new or would EBay be worth a punt for what I would consider a delicate tool, no way of knowing how the previous owner has maintained and cleaned it??

Cheers
Steve

A second hand one should be okay if it’s been maintained - it’s relatively easy to strip them and check - there shouldn’t be any paint residue in the internals at all. Paint spots on the outside isn’t a good sign either, or under the paint reservoir cap. letting paint go hard in them, especially 2k, effectively destroys them.

I haven’t checked but I bet there are videos on YouTube on how to strip, inspect and clean spray guns.

https://spraygunsdirect.co.uk/produc...n-best-seller/

This is the one I use now, can be run from a small compressor, has interchangeable fluid tips, easy to set up, would reccommend a 1.4 fluid tip for basecoats and clearcoats,
a word about paints, do not use 2k unless you have an air fed mask, and somewhere enclosed to spray, paint fumes from this are toxic, also you have to get the ratio - paint, hardener & thinners correct.
I would suggest you don't use cellulose as it may cause a reaction with the paint already on the car, which may not be apparent until a few days after spraying
Most base coats and aerosols (paint and clear laquers) are acrylic.

Good luck
