Default 940 70mm lowered

Hello folks

Im new here i have recently acquired my dads old 940.

Im looking at lowering it 70mm with springs, shocks and adjustable panhard rod from classic swede.

Ive spent some time searching the forum but can only find one thread with photos of a 940 estate lowered on 70mm springs, and according to the OP it didnt go too well.

Can anyone share pics of their 940 estate lowered 70mm, i just want to be certain its not more than i want.

When i make the purchase the installation will be covered on my youtube channel.

Thanks guys.

Hey Adam

Any data I've managed to find tells me that the 940 sits 4.2 inches above the road. 107mm. Consider what removing 75% of that would do to your ability to negotiate speed bumps, curbs, etc.

If you go ahead, the panhard is a requirement. So is the negative camber retrofit at the front.

HAve fun!

I've read about the camber adjustment requirment.
I'll have to have another look on the classicswede website I'm sure I saw some adjustable camber top mounts.

Before I do all that I need to change the clutch and have a look at all the bushes. The car has never had any thing like that replaced before.

Hmmm. I don’t have any figures but 107mm doesn’t seem right. I know someone who has lowered his 940 the lowest I’ve ever seen and while it does
scrape a bit I’m sure it’s been lowered more than 100mm.

Welcome aboard Adam!

Not sure if this will be helpful or not but it's here :

https://www.vehiclehistory.com/repor...=940&year=1993

That quotes the minimum ground clearance as 4.1" which suggests (to me anyway) that is the minimum for safety - e.g. it might be possible to rip the ful pump off on a speed hump if you go lower. I can't find anywhere, including in Volvos own technical data online that actually quotes the exact standard, unladen ground clearance.

On my 760 (a 940 bodyshell in all but name), on standard new springs/shocks, i'd estimate the ground clearance to be about 5.5-6.0" and even that has scuffed a few speed bumps. The top of my estimate is 6" which is a smidge over 150mm - take half of that away and i'm sure i'd be gouging speed bumps, not scuffing them! I'd also have a standing appointment at the nearest chiropractors to sort my back out!

I'm guessing you're fairly young at the moment and this is probably an "old codgers" viewpoint but given the state of the roads in this country i wouldn't lower any car from standard at the moment.

Two reasons - first is if you hit a pothole, you're in danger of doing body damage and second, it might not feel like it now but all those extra bumps from hard suspension won't do you any favours when you get older and back trouble is not a nice thing to have!

Most people that lower their Volvos seem to go for the 40mm drop, seems a much more practical solution to me. It's your car and your money though so it's up to you, there will be loads of people supporting your idea to lower it and always at least one voice of dissent (mine in this case) suggesting not to or only go to 40mm lower.

On a more positive note, i would strongly suggest finding someone reasonably local that will let you have a good look at their lowered Volvo, maybe even drive it. That way you can compare your standard, tired suspension set up with a fresh, lowered (preferably find 2 people, one that has 40mm lower and the other 70mm lower) set up. If possible, find someone as well that has recently refreshed their standard set up then you should have all the knowledge you need to make the best decision for you and your car.

Why not just buy 40mm lowering springs and then if you still think it's too high just cut half or a full coil off?

I've got a set of brand new Kilen lowering springs you can have for £70. I'm near Swad so no postage required.

Avoid classicshyst if possible.

That sounds like the best plan. Cutting 940 springs is ok as they are linear rate ones so are perfectly safe to cut down.

And yes, I've heard about too many issues from CS to buy from him, not so much the problem itself but his attitude to problems that occur.

I fully understand all of that which to a certain degree is why im asking questions/being cautious. Im nearly 36 and certainly dont feel young lol, my children think its hilarious that i want to lower the volvo. My current car which is for sale is a BMW e39, i only went so far as to fit original M sport suspension which dropped it about 15mm but stiffened it up no end, but not to the point i felt uncomfortable.
