That's probably a grease that virtually all of the Volvo connectors have on them, pull the connector off of your MAF/CPS or anything easy to get to in the engine bay and you will see it.

There's a happy end to this thread. I picked the Volvo up from my mechanic today. There was a load of green gunk inside the diff, clogging up the sensor. It was removed, cleaned, put back in, and it worked straight away.

I'm not sure where the gunk came from, but it's likely just wear and tear. I have a persistent wet patch in the rear driver-side footwell. There's a bay under the driver seat that has a vent directly out onto the carpet. That bay is full of water, and the waves crash over, and through vent, and flood the carpet. I've never been able to find how the water is getting into that bay.

good to here the result with the ABS sensor problem ,take a look under the bonnet at the fault finder boxes and famiierise yourself what they can do they may be helpful one day ,
as for water in the footwell that needs sorting out ASAP as these cars will rot out in time with that problem get the carpet and underlay out and dry the area and check for rust ingress ive seen a few caused by that , not a hard job you may need to remove drivers seat i did when i had that problem find out where the water is getting in and how sounds like blocked drainage holes ,
keep us informed and good luck !
