Default Rare Model 940

My recent purchase of a 940S Estate from Mathewsons seems to be a rare model. According to the website, www.howmanyleft.co.uk there are 192 petrol 940's left in the U.K.; 185 of them engine size - 2301cc - 2400cc. (98 licenced and 84 sorn).

Of the smaller engine (1986cc) there are only 2 licenced and 3 sorn. And mine seems to be the only one registered in 1994! although there there are 47 recorded as with an unknown registration date? The website also doesn't differentiate between saloons and estates.

Mine is a non turbo and from an oomph point of view, maybe not so desirable. But it happens with all models I guess, everyone one wants the top of the range/fastest/best spec etc.

Definitely one to preserve.

I’m never sure how accurate those websites are or how well they distinguish between model variants. I think the 2.0 was more popular in the UK before 1994 because the benefit in kind tax arrangements were more generous for company cars under 2.0 litres before that year.

I owned a 2.0 Turbo 940 for many years and it was actually a bit more powerful than the corresponding 2.3 LPT. I think some people do find the NA 2.0 a bit gutless. Depends what you’re looking for in a thirty year old estate car I guess!

They are good cars and worth preserving because with a bit of care they will long outlast over-complicated modern cars. I hope yours serves you well for many years to come.

I agree. It is not the raw power that floats my boat, it is how it is delivered. You have to work a two litre hard to get a wriggle on where the 2.3 offers oodles of low-down torque which, in my humble opinion, makes for a much more pleasant driving experience. As you need to work the smaller engine harder, in my experience, like for like, it is no more economical than the larger. Hence, the only real advantage of the smaller engine was the BIK taxation class alluded to by 'Forrest', above.

Regards, John.

It depends what the dvla cretin put down on the form when registering.

There are 2,531 940s taxed and 2,839 on sorn, of which a 940 S could have been registered as:

940
940 AUTO
940 GL
940 GL AUTO
940 L
940 L AUTO
940 S
940 S AUTO

A total to 480 currently taxed, of which 280 are the 2.0.

It's a nonsense. The website is showing totall different info, to what I quoted originally. As others have said, take with a pinch of salt.

Yes, it's a bit vague and only really used as a selling point on eBay....

It might be a half decent guide as to how many are left, but certainly not accurate given the number of variables

Edit - just looked online at how many 406 Coupes are left
There are 25 left - and 31 of those are 2.0ltr 🙄

Never driven a 2 litre Volvo RWD.

I have a bog standard 2.3 LPT B230FK estate. It's an automatic and Volvo got it just right. No real turbo lag and a good gearbox/ engine combination. One day may make it a HPT!

James.

My 760gle turbo diesel is listed as 760 with sunroof by the DVLA , no mention of it being a diesel at all!
The model info depends how the dealer writes in down. A 940 sport edition has se turbo on the tailgate so could be just a 940 se on the V5. It could also have 940 sport edition on the V5.
All to be taken with a pinch of salt.
If you want rare ones ask me about my 760s!

It's a bit like the 1976/77 Vauxhall VX2300GLS: all of them left the factory with automatic gearboxes, at least three original manual examples lived in the town and villages around me. Never take official figures at face value; as the police detective guide has it: ABC Assume nothing, Believe nobody, Check everything.
But 31 of the 25 being of one model defies sense-checking!
