Default Rear upper arm bushing replacement

Hi, I may have bitten off more than I can chew, and I'm looking for some advice.

I'm trying to replace the leading rear upper control arm bushing (part number 31277897) on my 2005 XC90. In theory it looks simple, undo a couple of bolts holding the carrier onto the subframe, slide it off and then slide on a new one.

My first problem was access to one of those bolts, the spring was in the way, so I've lowered the bottom arm to get the spring out of the way.

I've now managed to remove the 2 two bolts, and the retaining spindle bolt, but there just isn't the clearance to slide the bushing and carrier off. See photo. A main subframe member is in the way.

I can get a lever in and move things down and away from the subframe, but I'm a bit wary about how much force to apply, and besides I don't have enough hands to then slide off the bush.

I did wonder if I should just go the whole hog and look at removing the whole upper arm, but that looks like it would have the same problem of not having enough clearance to slide the whole arm towards the front of the car. It will hit the same subframe member.

So my question, does anyone have any top tips on how to remove this bushing (and then get a new one back on). If removing the whole upper arm is the answer, is this even something I should be attempting in my drive! I'd have to take the exhaust off to get at the trailing upper bushing bolt.

Any help or pointers appreciated.

Default Got it off

I decided to be a bit braver with levering the arm. So utility bar, crowbar and block of wood later, I have managed to get the carrier and bush off. It's completely knackered. The carrier has completely perished right through at one point, so can see the outer casing of the bushing.

Now all need to do is order a replacement from that chap who always gets a favourable mention on these forms. FRF Volvo in wales?

A quick update. I've got the new bush and bracket on and installed (I ended up getting it from the local Volvo dealer for £56+VAT). As you can see from the photos, it doesn't look quite right! Though the bolt holes on the bracket are elongated they are not elongated enough to match up nicely with the captive nuts on the subframe.

Fortunately as it is a rubber bush, I was able to get them to line up by forcing the bush off the square a bit. There's the possibility it is supposed to be like that, but I suspect somethings a bit off with location of the nuts on my frame. Perhaps someone who knows what they are doing would have elongated the holes a bit more, before installing it!

I'll do the other side sometime, and if it is is also off the square with the new bush, then I may assume it is supposed to be like that. Otherwise I'll may remove this bush again, and drill a more elongated hole(s), so it sits a bit more square.

I've taken some short videos of what I had to do to get this job done, and I'll upload it to Youtube some time.

Might find that once the weight goes onto the suspension it will sit correctly

I suppose it might, I don't see it myself. However perhaps my levering of the arm to get the bush off and then on has left things sitting awkwardly.

It isn't actually back on all fours yet, as I need to have a look at the rear brakes too.

A small update in case anyone is interested. I did the other side bush, it was easier knowing what to expect. I also had the shock out to replace that too, which meant access was better. The toughest part was the bolt through the bush into the arm. It was a lot tougher to budge than the other side, and access is limited. A long spanner, or I tried a crowsfoot and breaker bar.

The new bush lines up fine, not off the square like the passenger side, so I reckon there's something odd with that side.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the write up on replacing the bushing and bracket.

I see you removed the coil spring to get to the top bolt and you say you did this by dropping the lower arm.

How did you do this please?
What else did you unbolt to allow the arm to drop a bit allowing the spring to decompress?

I can now concur this is a ballache of a job!

I got the spring down a bit to access the bolt and with a bit of leverage the bushing came out.

The bushing is knackered, so I just have to find a supplier that isnt charging and arm and a leg. My local Volvo dealer is circa £100 each side !

Hi, I’ve been reading this as I have to replace these myself. There is a left sided one and a right sided one, it could be that the one that is not lining up properly is on the wrong side. Hope this helps
