Volvo UK have always recommended Castrol EDGE Professional A5/B5 0W-30 for your engine.

Volvo UK recommend Castrol Edge Professional A5/B5 0W-30, and if you can find that and buy it - you won't go wrong. I say that as the Castrol Edge you buy from Halfords or Euro Car Parts etc. is not "Professional", but has the same spec. What the difference is, if any, I don't know.

But - I think it is fair to say other oil manufacturers also make A5/B5 0W-30 spec oils which would be not discernably different in anyway and do the job just as well, such as Shell Helix, Mobil Super, Comma Voltech etc.

And... the same with the weights. The first Euro3 D5's were specified at 5W-30 for the UK climate, but Volvo revised this to 0W-30 when the Euro 4 version of the engine was introduced.

For many years I used to run my 2.0D's, D5's and T5's on Comma X-Tech 5W-30 A5/B5 as it was good value and met specs (of the earlier cars anyway).

However the last time I serviced my own car I got a service kit from a Volvo dealer from e-Bay which included Volvo branded oil and there was a noticeable difference as to how quiet the car was at cold start and general running. Even my wife noticed it and commented... so I'm a convert back to following the advice to the letter.

Just to be clear I'm not suggesting using another oil will cause any damage or shorten the engine life, but there is something about the Volvo branded stuff (apart from the price...)

What I would say though (even though not qualified....) is only ever use Fully Synthetic oil. Anything labelled Semi Synthetic is usually mineral based with synthetic additives, and mineral oils are prone to cooking in hot turbos and leaving deposits which can block oilways - especially on diesel engines where turbo's are generally not water cooled.

Really? Then why does the original poster's owner's manual give him several options of oil types to choose from? You know... the manual that Volvo had produced for that particular car

Its not "personal opinion" or people "thinking they know best"... its in the handbook that came with the car... the manufacturer produced it. Volvo recommend 0w30 A5/B5 oil, but it also lists other options. That doesn't mean you have to only use 0w30... they said it themselves and printed it!

I don't have qualifications in oil technology or manufacturing... I openly admit that. If you don't, then its a little condescending to start talking about people "thinking they know best" or having "personal opinions", when simply all that's being said is what's in the manual that the manufacturer produced.

Clearly you don't know best either, if you're disagreeing with what's in Volvo's handbook.

I should do after working on them for 47 years The 0w/30 is probably chosen from 2005 to comply with emission regulations hence better fuel consumption than 5w/30. all car handbooks have always had alternative grades for different climates but for UK its 0w/30 .

Its not even that cold here compared to some places, nor is it necessarily hot either.

0w30 is definitely over the top, here anyway. 5w30 is perfectly adequate for this country based off the chart in the handbook. I’ll continue using it… Volvo say I can. That’ll do me.
