I dread to think how messy the top of the engine is.

Here's some pics anyway.

The mixer pipe is the metal 90deg pipe in the right of the image. It was well caked in slimey black sooty cr@p.

Also the inlet into the top of the engine was thick with the same gunk.

Prior to removal

After removal

The EGR inlet hole (I think)

This is the common point for people to blank off the EGR.

And after a good clean up

Cleaned it up using carb cleaner and a LOT of kitchen roll. If you're going to do it invest in some latex gloves as it's a very messy job. Also tried as best as I could to clean out the top of engine inlet pipe and managed to scoop out a lot of mess with my fingers then cleaned out with carb cleaner and kitchen roll. It would really mean taking the top engine cover off to clean out properly but this would take a lot longer and mean messing about with the fuel lines, couldn't be bothered with that.

Easy job, just need a screw driver for the jubilee clips, takes an hour max.

The car seems to run a little smoother now and throttle response has improved, not a hugely noticable difference but it can't be good for the car to have all that horrible gunky cr@p in there.

For info my car is a 2002 V70 D5 on 103k.

The question is, would blanking my EGR valve prevent this from building up in future? I'm tempted to leave it be as the car runs fine as is.
Thank you for the photos. I feel hesitation from the engine around 50km/h and a few users mentioned this may be due to a dirty/clogged EGR mixer/valve. Is there any chance someone has a detailed description with photos or video on how to access the EGR?
Thank you.

It has NO problems with the yearly test, tester even commented how LOW the emissions were . Dont give a Toss about the Enviroment, Yanks and China are the big polluters .

Your illegal modification will cause your car to produce far more NOx, which is a local problem, nothing to do with international polluters! Causes deaths in children by bringing on asthma, so definitely immoral.

Not an MoT failure though...

As well as causing breathing problems in children and adults, up to an including death, the attitude of not caring about the environment is pretty dim for anyone under about 65 or anyone with children and selfishly immoral in all cases.

While our pollution levels are lower than those of China and the US, we cannot expect wider change if we don’t take part ourselves - and that’s before we consider that the worlds wealthy nations have benefitted most from polluting and have a responsibility to support poorer nations in the necessary change

Right, back onto the topic, just about to pop out and have a look over our S80. I can't imagine it's made it 200k without ever being cleaned but you never know what you'll find... Pics to follow if horrendous!

Edit-: Aaand 40 minutes later, bad light and low blood sugar stop play but it's back together and the mixer pipe and rubber hose are now clean. Not as bad as expected, still pretty bad though around 3-4mm of gunk all round so 6-8mm of the overall diameter. Considering it's a 200k ex taxi though not bad & the EGR still very much in play. I'll have to see if anything is smoother although it was pretty good anyway, but I think the biggest gains for me will be in the plenum/cam cover when I get time to clean it all properly.

Oh and the gunk, not good on toast at all. NOTHING like Marmite whatsoever

It's not dangerous on skin contact, so quit beating up on yourselves about it.

I still can't believe my joke about EGR sludge-disposal specialists was taken seriously!
you are right it does not damage skin it tastes similar to marmite but make sure its on un- burnt toast as the black burnt bits of toast are not good for you

Anyone genuinely worried about diesel NOx emissions shouldn’t be driving diesels full stop. Far more effective than being self-righteous on car forums aiming needless/pointless digs at people blanking off their EGRs. It’s actually quite difficult not to break the law in some shape or forms these days. Diesel and Petrol cars are dirty full stop. Always have been. Always will be. No amount of tech is going to fully eliminate that problem.

Probably best off on a rambling forum.
