Again, top whack was 133 for the manual and 137 for the auto, again massaged to read 133 for auto and 137 for the manual.

The early turbo Vitesse was (if memory serves) 0-60 7.2, top speed 143mph, later 200bhp was 0-60 6.5 and top end of 146mph.

Thee were the manufacturers figures, so many different road testers got varying results and their results went down in the records as being "accurate". Takes a bit of practice to get the best out of individual cars and for comparison, ideally the same driver. That's why i prefer the manufactures unmassaged figures.

The reason they massaged them (and so did Honda for the Legend) is nobody at the time would have believed the auto could outgun and outrun the manual.

That said, i do know (please don't ask me how ) the auto is very capable of 145mph and still accelerating like the clappers.
Makes sense for them i suppose but then it would only take a test drive to prove it was true, and yep, i too know that they could do 147, heard it from a friend it was certainly a wolf in sheeps clothing at the time, i think i was getting about 32mpg too, I did get the M reg ex police too, forgot about that lol, BUT, that was only good for 130 tops, they broke sommat when the changed shape the turbo was ok but i am sure it was breaking down a lot too

Was your M reg a 2.7 or 2.0 turbo? The Mk2s should be quicker, especially as the Police had decat boxes as OE fit. Worth another 24bhp over the "published" figure of 169bhp so the 2.7 n/asp was on a par with the 2.0 turbo for public use give or take about 4 bhp.

It was the 2.7,i was expecting at least on par with the G plate, it may have been as quick getting there but top end was pants, I was told it had prob worn itself out but I was umsure that that was all it ever did, it was a ****adointment...

Sounds like the one-way clutch in the torque converter had siezed. That would do it, very shaprp acceleration and gear changes but not much in the way of top end.?

On either box it could have been the second stage of the variable inlet length not working.

Under hard acceleration from rest, there should have been two "kicks in the back", one at about 2000rpm, the second at about 4000rpm (usually the more obvious one) and if either is missing, the inlet length will be wrong and it won't develop the power it should.
