The gearbox for my 1999 S80 T6 failed at 71000kms. I took it in to the dealer who quoted over $5000 for a replacement, labour and related resources - I refused to part away with that much for a car that is more than 10years old!
After some read-ups on this forum and matthewsvolvosite I decided to have a go at changing the fluid and the filter (there are very nice writeups about this on these fora); it is actually quite a simple job if you follow the instructions and use the recommended ATF. The car has done over 8000kms and is still shifting smoothly and running great since, though I must admit I have been moving with a spare filter and some extra ATF if am going very far; just in case! I took a few pics of the filter when I opened it to see why it had failed!

Thinking about it now, I could have thrown away my Autobox just because of a clogged filter!

Here is a link to the tutorial I used:

Are you basically saying the AT went from being failed to doing 8000km after the quick renovation and cleaning. That could save me £1700!

I read on honest John that BMW auto boxes will fail after 80k plus even with full BMW service history. No dealer in the UK swops the oil out. IN the USA they do and they don't get failures. So VOLVO owners ...... listen up.

S80 d5 SE 02 plate 145k miles.Have the same problem as you + occasional big clunk drive-reverse. New box fitted 120k but auto box specialist reckons the problem is the electronic gearbox management system. Is there such a piece of kit?

On the same lines as others -

my 2000 XC70 petrol auto has done 92k and when cold it tends to hang on to 2nd gear a little bit longer than normal until things warm up and it also tends to "clunk" into drive when its on our drive, the drive is quite steep and I always assumed that it was this that was causing the clunk but having read this would a fluid change perhaps remove these problems?

cheers

I had the dealer change the ATF in my V70 at about 40,000 miles. I had a couple of episodes of high revving (I thought indicating a missed shift), and have had no repeats of this behaviour. Also the ATF was no longer bright red, but a dull dirty maroon. It has done 10,000 miles since the change.

Don't take one garage's word for it consult a reputable auto box specialist.
If the box is dead - can it be economically repaired?
If not - can a replacement box be obtained from a breakers yard and fitted economically?

At 52000 miles this car is only just run in and has thousands of miles of luxury travel left in it, ask yourself the question - what other car could I buy to replace this car for the price of the gearbox repair/replacement mixed with the scrap value? - not a busting lot!

For every faulty auto box you'll find on this forum there will be thousands that give no trouble at all - after all nobody posts a topic that says 'My autobox is bl**dy marvelous' do they?

Cheers,
Pip
I have had a high temp. Warning message displayed it would appear. An 04 error code. It told my to replace my auto oil at next service despite having done that a couple of thousand miles ago. Could it be a faulty sensor or it's it likely to be more serious. Milage now 110,000 ish. Any help greatly received .

An old post you originally replied to but your issue is more likely to be that the computer which records the total amount of time the ATF is above a certain temperature wasn't reset when the fluid was changed 2k miles ago. If the box is running OK and the fluid looks OK with a correct level, just get it reset.

EDIT: Sorry, I've just seen your other post on this issue, it looks as if you've already attempted to reset it.
