Default Dash creak still there!

After my saga with the dash top the rattle has gone but a creak has arrived - I had the top off again yesterday and confirmed that it has nothing to do with it, it's the entire dash assemly that's creaking against whatever it rests on under the windscreen.

Copper grease was eased into the tiny gap with (I hope) some amelioration of the noise, but I really would appreciate any other suggestions.

Simon,

sounds like you're going to have to take the whole dash and ventilation ducting out }( }( x(

Sorry I just couldn't help it!

I have a dash creak that drove me wild for some time, then I found the cause. It was the top of the instrument panel. Somehow during previous dash removals whateven means of locking the panel in place got damaged and now if I push the top of the panel and it moves back. I am thinking of putting some Dum-Dum or Blue Tack in the gap to keep it firm.

I had similar woes with a prevoius Saab, my solution was to use the sticky back draught excluder, the small 6mm wide stuff, I put it on the inside edge and on all the places where it was likely to rub against plastic.

Forgot to state the obvious!, make sure all surfaces are clean, what I used was thinners, I know thats a bit drastic but it really helped the adhesive stick, just have to be carefull you don't get any on the bits that show

Simon,

You could try a liberal dose of (cutdown) self adhesive velco pads. I don't know if they would work that well (worth a try), but at the very least there would be a small gap between the two componants. It would probabably stop the creaking if you can live with a gap between the instrument binnacle and the dash pad.

I have a similar problem, except the dash pad has pulled away from the top of the glove box and around the instrument binnacle.

I am currently looking for both a R/H/D dark grey dash pad and a complete R/H/D dash surround? I have tried most of the local wreckers but no-one seems able to help. Can anybody help with locating both, price, availabity and transit??

Cheers,

The problem with any large mechanical solution is that I can't get between the dash and the windscreen with any tool except the thinnest.

This is not the top that's the problem, it's the main dash moulding under the top that is bolted to the car.

Haynes I believe says that the dash bolts are under the plastic shield below the wiper blades - anyone opened this up to confirm?

Simon,

yes, that's right, 4 bolts I think. You should be able after removing the wiper arms to get the plastic top off and loosten the fixing bolts enough to get some clearence between the firewall and the a/c ducting to get material etc pads in.

I tightened the bolts on my S70 last summer. It involved removing the wiper arms, unscrewing the plastic guttering and unclipping the drainpipe. I think I had to move the fusebox as well. The bolts were quite difficult to access even then. Good time to change the pollen filter, by the way.

And now I'm wondering if a small crack in the dash moulding up near the windscreen - in the centre, where there's a capped hole for the alarm diode - is due to my tightening them too much. I've read posts about the bolts having plastic clips that tend to break. All this plastic...
