Default B5244S - 3000miles/litre of oil okay?

Hi,

Can you please tell me if my 2.4litre normally aspirated 5 cylinder should be using a litre of oil every 3000 miles?

The engine has covered 125k miles and appears to have had most oil services in its life.

It currently running on 5W30 synthetic oil. It is used for 2 x 11 mile commutes per day.

What are your thoughts?

Paul

That sounds like a hell of a lot to me! Mine with 115,000 doesn’t use a drop, and I have previously run fords and such to 150k with little to no consumption at all.

Thanks for pitching in, which engine is fitted to your car?

Compared to other cars I've owned this is high. But compared to other cars I know it its okay. My problem is that I dont know what's normal for this engine

I own the diesel 2.4 D5 (2012).

I have previously run from 1.0l Petrol to 2.5 Petrol and 1.6 diesel to 2.5 diesel.

I once had an exceptionally high mile car (250k plus) that burnt that much and I had to replace valve stem oil seals.

If it’s not burning it then crankcase ventilation or a gasket etc may be the problem.

I would not wish to leave that myself.

Anything up to about 1 to 1.25 litres in 1500 miles is acceptable and safe and within the range that most manufacturers decree to be acceptable.

However, that does not mean it is desirable, particularly as these motors rarely use any real amount between changes. Time for a bit of investigative work to identify the cause before it has the opportunity to become a real problem.

Same engine as yours but S40.

My oil consumption was similar until i ran a can of engine flush prior to an oil change. Result is now minimal consumption between annual oil changes.

Thanks for this tip. Did you decide to do the engine flush because its an established solution known for these engines?

It has been discussed before on these forums. Some folks have experienced high consumption if the oil.level is kept at full. However, if the level is kept at around the half full mark consumption is minimal.

Many thanks for this information - I will test this out on my car. I tried a forum search before posting but never came across this tip. I'm new to P2 ownership, so all of the contributions are really helpful from you more seasoned owners.
