I'm not bothering this year. It's been costing me £100.00 per year to get the tyres mounted and to be honest the couple of times it has snowed enough to need them I was still stuck crawling behind everyone else on 'summers' heck if the weather's that bad stay at home!

Got caught once in really heavy snow on summer tyres and the T5 really helped me out by hauling itself along in 3rd gear at 1200 rpm...sailed past loads of stuck cars that night.

Now I've said that it'll be the worst winter ever lol.

I only bought mine last week but it came with brand new Michellin Cross Climates on the front, and Kleber Dynaxers (?) on the rear and spare, so its more a case of I need to source some summer tyres when the time comes!

In 35 years plus of motoring all over the country, I've never changed tyres seasonally and apart from a few wheelspins on icy patches, never had an issue.

Fair enough if you live in very rural areas but I suspect for the vast majority of the population you would get a baffled look if mentioning winter tyres.

I once got caught out in the previous D5 manual C70 and had to drive about 20 miles up and down various hills in the Chilterns in 2"-3" of laying snow on summer tyres. It couldn't get me everywhere once other cars compacted the snow into ice, but I was pleasantly surprised at just how much it could cope with. As above, 1200rpm in 3rd got me home, albeit the longer and shallower way round in one place.

With that day in mind, I later jumped at the chance of a set of fairly battered C70 rims second hand and fitted them with winter tyres. They were on the car from early December to at least the end of March for a couple of winters. They rode beautifully but I don't think they ever even saw ½" of snow! For that reason, and because the summer wheels were nicer and with newer and freshly-balanced tyres, I put the winters back on it when I traded it in against the current C70 back in May this year.

So I've just last week put the old car's summer wheels onto the current car for the winter. The idea is that being 17" they should be more resilient against potholes than the 18" that this one came with, plus they've already seen a kerb or two so less of a worry if I do have the odd hairy moment. And I can leave them on as long as I like next year. Which considering how much better they ride than the 18", might even be until it gets properly warm again!

I'd put Michelins on the rear and keep them on all year.

should try and pop your winters on another set of wheels and just swap the whole thing over, definitely worth it and saves your summer wheels from all the road grit and gunk

My winters are on their own set of wheels and costs nothing to swap over really and its a good chance to give the wheels a good clean every time you swap them around

Can I point out that winter tyres are just what they say, they are for use in the winter not just when it is snowing.

They should be used when the ambient temperature falls below 7c as this is when the rubber in summer tyres stops performing correctly and the winter tyre compound is effective.

It is a myth, which seems difficult to destroy, that winter tyres are for snow, they are good for snow - if they are marked as such and it is worth checking that they are marked for snow, many winter tyres are not designed for use a snow tyre

I think what I'm going to do is sell my 17s with winters and source a nice set of 16s to use all year. I live a stones throw from a gritted road and work a stones throw from a gritted road, and have the flexibility to work from home when conditions are rough

16" will give you a deeper tyre wall, always useful on rough roads. Tyres are slightly cheaper as well.

Just had them swapped over today, £5 at my local fitters.
Taking my wife's car tomorrow, picked up alloys for £100.01 by watching eBay regularly. They make a huge difference in the cold, but as I regularly drive to the alps, I have no choice!
