Heater Box

Hello
I'm currently renovating the heater box on my 1969 1800S. It's missing (as was the spare box I had) the drain tube at the bottom. I've tried a couple of ways of replicating it, but it's not been a success so far, but I have a couple of other ideas. In the meantime I checked under the interior mats on the transmission tunnel to see where the drain hole was and there wasn't one, or at least there was, but it was already spoken for by a grommet and two cables that I think I've identified as going to the overdrive box (the location makes sense). So my question is firstly, do I need a drain pipe in the heater box? Secondly, if I do and the hole already there is the one for the pipe, what was the original route for the overdrive cables? Through the same hole? Any thoughts appreciated

Hiya Simon,
The heater drain pipe should fit through the transmission cover, not those cables.
I guess those are for either the overdrive or reverse light switch, or both.
If I remember correctly the overdrive wires and reverse light cables are clipped between the the battery and heater casing under the bonnet., and the clip the underside of transmission tunnel.
The drain hose is fiddly and not very secure, and again if I remember correctly, can only be fitted from inside the case. I used silicone adhesive to secure mine.

Yes it has to fitted from inside. Mine heater box is still in two halves so not a problem. I managed to order a drain hose from Brookhouse so that's solved that problem.
I can see it's going to be fiddly, but what isn't on these cars?

If your box just had the broken off stub end of the rubber and you still have it, check to see if it has the small nylon insert in it. This should be fitted to make the grommet end of the tube seal properly. Fit rubber and then insert the nylon spreader.

If your box has a small tube brazed into the case for the rubber hose ignore the above. If the rubber tube is anything other than a tight fit glue/seal it onto the metal tube.

All I have is the hole in the bottom of the casing, no traces of pipe or insert.
I'll see what arrives from Brookhouse today and be sure to glue/seal it in.
