Oil Temp Sensor?
I assume there is a seperate sensor for the oil tempeture? It was working, only noticed last night that after an hour of driving, the gauge was still reading cold? I'm nearly sure that couldn't be right, not with the water temp at 76. Is 76 about right for these engines? Or do I need a thermostat too? Heater wouldn't be anything special either
Forgot to add, car is my latest project, 2.0 V40 petrol 1997

yes your thermostat is faulty should read about 85 - 90 C
The oil temp sender is on the front part of the engine not far from the starter motor part 70808951 but check that the wire isnt broken on the sensor plug.

Cheers Clan, is it the same sensor as the oil pressure, or a different one?

Oil temp sensor
Dont know if the oil temp and oil pressure are one and the same but your thermostat is indeed faulty. If you have the info centre fitted, the water temp will start to show above 40c and the oil above 50c.
Change your thermostat and you will find the heater will be really good. |

it is a separate sensor to the oil pressure light switch ...
Thats a thought , if your oil temp isnt getting to 50C even which is likely with a faulty thermostat , waiit until you have replaced the thermostat then go on a 10 mile + journey with plenty of revvs to warm the oil ..

Thats quite possible, then, the few times I seen it work was after it had been running for a period of time in traffic ect, hope that didn't sound silly about the thermostat, I'm just not used to the digital readouts lol, I was thinking myself it should be in and around at least 80
Thanks for the advice guys

I believe they were the same sender on the 480 but separate sensors on the X40.
