I fitted HIDs to my V50 before realising about these problems.

Mine are just standard HIDs and they flicker and go out, then bring on warning messages.

So if i buy the Car Mod Shop Canbus set above ( http://www.car-mod-shop.co.uk/H7-Xen...Conversion-kit ) then fit them aswell as directly earthing them to the car, they should be fine??

correct.....direct earth the ballast to car (top of suspension turret)
and rather than use lighting plug earth i connected direct to body behind light with a flying lead.

up to now no problems or flickering just really good dipped beams

I also got DRL's turned off

I can take pics if required

Pics would be great!

From what ive read, its the alternating current that causes the problem. Volvo done it to make the bulbs last longer since theyre on all the time. It would seem true aswell, as i tried running them through a relay- but then the relay just rattled as it was getting constant change in voltage between 0 and 12v!

So does turning the DRL off, also return the feed back to a standard constant 12v? In that case that would fix the problem.

Ive ordered a pair of plug and play capacitors for £6.50 (Bargain?) to try (Better than buying another set of HIDs at £60), they say theyre for these exact problems. I suppose they store the spikes of current then feed out a constant current like they require!

Ill keep it updated, ill get them somehow!

P.S heres the capacitors: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1906589106...9#ht_599wt_952

If your patient, you can get them for £3 from Hong Kong!!

i pondered this matter a bit too.

Don't like DRL's - not sure how system behaves now
but if i leave switch at 12 oclock position they act same as before (as in they switch off with ignition) but 0 actually means nothing not lights again !

I have read stories about HID's frying wiper motors if earthed via light
not only on Volvo but my mate had a Seat leon and he fried two of them.

i also went for 4300k which is OEM colour with generates the most lumens and therefore more usable light on't road.

Got my capacitors so will hopefully trial fit them tonight! Fingers crossed that sorts them.

I spoke to Car Mod Shop who said that the HID kit you linked to would probably not work on Volvo S40/V50 and that the 'super warning cancellers' should hopefully sort the problem. He linked me to them on Ebay at £20 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3505396352...ht_2816wt_1195

Resistor? Dont understand that. Plus it has a relay loom so basically using battery power through a relay which is triggered by the headlamp feed.

I tried the relay idea and the relay just rattled on and off very quickly as the current alternated, so that doesnt work. Maybe a capacitor in the feed to the relay would work, but then there might not be a need for a relay if a capacitor on its own works...

Hmmmm

i'll have a look in garage tonight at what kit i got which works without error cancellers

plus the light pics

out of interest the bulbs have metal locators to the headlight rather than cheap plastics ones.
