Default V50 1.8 petrol high idle issue

Hello there - I have been trying to search the forum but it either tells me I'm not logged in or nothing happens at all when I press search this forum... Must be an issue with the mobile browser... Anyway

My 1.8 has recently started to sit at high revs on idle, and if you press the pedal it will hold a higher level for a while before coming back down, I've read briefly (via Google) that there is an idle control valve but none of the articles were on this engine, just wanted to make sure its a possibility before opening up the bonnet as I've not got a garage to work in at the moment!

Any other thoughts/suggestions would be good

Cheers

I haven't tried putting my foot on the accelerator to see if it holds higher revs for a while but my S40 often idles at 1100 RPM (seems to go down to under 1000 RPM, maybe 800-900..., after the engine has been running for a while). Is this a problem? What should it be at?

It's definitely getting higher slowly - I've never recorded the level before but it was under 1000 at idle, it's a notable difference

Tried revving in neutral today and my engine definitely doesn't stay at higher revs, it drops back down to around 1K RPM as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator.

Hmmm sounds weird on the high revs, have you checked for any splits or vacum leaks?

done a quick google:
"Check your PCV valve, and make sure that it is properly seated and not stuck open. This can behave as a vacuum leak.

Check your oil fill cap, and make sure that it is well seated.

Check all your vacuum lines, very gently, because it's a disappointment to crack a brittle vacuum line or connector *while* looking for a vacuum leak.

Check your Idle Air Control Valve. They get a little gunky, and if it is stuck so that it cannot close all the way, the engine will always get extra air just like a vacuum leak, and the fuel injection will compensate by adding more fuel. Actually, don't check it: just remove the IAC, spray it out with IAC cleaner, and remount it, and see if that fixes it.

Check the throttle linkage and the throttle spring."

I have a T5 and initially sits at higher revs to warm up but then drops down.

Yeh on start up the car will rev and hold itself above the line for a bit and then drop down after a bit. (I never pull of until its dropped down)
