I was last in Paris 2-3 years ago, no car. The traffic was constant and barely moved, pollution was terrible. It was awful. Why anyone would want to drive into Paris is beyond me. The best cars to use there were little city cars such as Smart, Fiat 500, Twingo, C1 and the like.

I'm in favour of this sort of move and I suspect it will not be long before something similar happens in London.

Surely banning ALL diesels would be a more productive exercise, such as buses and lorries?

Not practical as pretty much all delivery vehicles, lorries, couriers etc that supply everything in Paris will be diesel. Some major cities put a ban on lorries between certain hours, eg 8-6, which would help, but you can't blanket ban diesels at this point.

This sort of thing already is happening in London, with the laughable low-emmissions-zone, still plenty of emmissions but not as sooty as once was. Older diesel commercials arent banned, they are heavily taxed, very effective.

Hello

Can't speak for Paris, but I'm in London as I type. The bus fleet is impressive, with hybrids, hydrogen power and gas buses everywhere.

I'm in the East End, and there's a lot of construction traffic here. Big, four axle tippers for a well known building company, mostly 65reg. I suspect that these new Scanias are as clean as they can be, but I doubt there's cleaner way to lug tons of spoil away from the latest of Boris's vanity projects.

To my mind, the bus and lorry traffic can't be banned, but the LT fleet shows the way forward. It's the trad London Black Cab that's the nasty, with what looks like an ageing fleet of old-school weapons grade diesels belching away. The newest black cabs are Vitos and Peugeot E7s, so compliant with whatever the latest emissions legislation says. I haven't seen a hybrid taxi.

Minicabs, though, are more progressive. I'm sat in a street parking bay, and in front of me is a Toyota mini cab - 65reg hybrid.

I was in the Congestion Charge zone yesterday. The number of private cars in resident bays staggered me. What's the point of owning a car when you live just off Russell Square? Surely it would be cheaper to use public transport, or even a taxi?

The company that owns the London Black cab manufacturer published the other week that their production had switched to making electric black cabs. I think Geely was the name.....

That would work well so everyone would have to use their cars to drive to out of city shopping centres because the London shops haven't had their deliveries.
