Default Problem with Selecting the Reverse Gear - S40

Hi, all

Just bought a 1998 S40 (manual, 1.9L) a month ago, which is in excellent condition. Everything is fine but a problem with the reverse gear.

I occasionally have problem with selecting the reverse gear when maneuvering the car. Basically the car still moves forward (feels like in gear 1) even if it looks the gear stick is in reverse. I need to pull it back to neutral and try a few more times to make sure the reverse is working. It is odd because this does not happen every time when I reverse and all the other gears work with no problems at all.

My instructor suggested that there might be something wrong with the top hat bush and it should be a easy job for the dealer. I have little knowledge in cars and just wonder if any of you has similar experience or what do you think might be the cause of my problem.

Thanks in advance.

Your instructor appears to be correct - its a common problem.

Do a search on the forums using "gearbox bushes" and all should be revealed. Its a while since I visited these forums but I seem to remember there is a very easy to follow photographic record of how to change these bushes. Cheap & easy to do if you DIY, butlike anything in life, it gets expensive if you go to a dealers.

Cheers

Caflem, thank you very much for the info. I am afraid that I will throw more Qs back at you

I found a post at <http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=43008&highlight=gearbox+bush>. Could you confirm this is the one I will need?

I noticed that this guide is for people having trouble getting into 1st, 2nd, and/or 5th gear. Will this also work on the Reverse Gear as this is what I am having problem with? The author also mentioned rear bushes in possibly another guide. What does the rear bush do?

Can anybody estimate how much it would cost if I get a volvo dealer or an independent volvo specialist to do this as this task looks a bit difficult for me at the moment?

Thanks again.

I wrote the guide - you should remove all the bushes and check out the condition then you'll know which ones to buy

For me the problem was 1st/2nd mainly but reverse is very common

The rear bush is just another link in the chain that can be worn in exactly the same manner. Follow the link in my sig to a thread with all the guides in

It's very easy and doesn't require many tools but if Volvo charge more than about £30-£40 then it'd be too much IMHO

You need to post in the S40/V50/C30 section as this only covers cars up to 2004. Completely different cars.

The reverse selection problem is a connected issue with worn gear rod bushes. I got a kit off Flea bay for about a tenner. I fiddly but easy job to do. Problem solved.
As the bushes wear in one plane, a common cheat is to rotate them 90 degrees, buys you a bit of time for money reasons or if you are getting shot of the car....ooops, did I really say that?
