I know a good volvo main dealer mech who can do them with the pulley on.

He said getting the old one off is more difficult with the pulley on. And cuts the belt off.

He levers the new belt on. using the pulley as fulcrum and uses a blunt chisel. It does get a small crimp across the width of the belt.

I worry about belts hence getting a pokey lecky impact wrench finally.

The time marks are visible with the pulley on, the oil pump has a blade and the crank dog has a ridge u line both along a common crank tooth.

I found it a bit of a knuckle scraper, the tension on the aux adjuster is high, and it was an arriss to get the pin In/out even with me new T60 .

I used the volvo hold tool, I also used the existing 4 pulley bolts to anchor the holding tool. The tool arm had to be about 7oclock - this let my 2ft breaker sit in a gap to the LHS of the wishbone, - rather than load up the driveshaft with the holding torque.

I didnt save any money this time as I bought tools

That doesnt sound like the official Volvo method that main dealers would use. Cambelts contain thin strands of glass as reinforcement and should to be treated with some care to avoid damage. Once they have been put under tension they should not be allowed to 'relax' again as it can cause premature failure.

It isn't the official method but some have used it DIY and it can save you quite a bit as you only need the most basic timing belt kit with no need for replacement bolts, counterhold tool, impact driver or 300Nm torque wrench.
I don't like the sound of this method though and will upgrade my tool collection to do it properly or take it to a main dealer.

Took my s60 to a main dealer for cambelt as I didn't have the time to do it myself, when I got it back the crank nut and the bolts had never been off. I removed the timming belt cover to make sure they had actually changed it and they had, couldn't see any marks on the new belt but they can't of removed the crank pulley as there was no evidence it had been off. There was still the bit of corrosion on the end of threads on the crank.

no they didn't they weren't itemised on my bill, if they had removed it I cant see them re using the old when best practice is to fit new. They would of liked to sell me a nut and 4 bolts im sure

The full picture is he is a volvo mech. He also moonlights at a respected volvo indie.

He offers the cheap Bodge or the dearer strip when hes at the indie.

Sorry for the confusion..

I dont like the idea personally hence I got

£30 hold tool
£126 300nm Torque wrench ( used once for £75 - bay )
£280 600nm impact wrench 240Volt - FFX tools
£178 belts and pulleys - volvo on ebay
£2.99 T60 1/2" drive for the aux tensioner
£6 30mm impact socket for crank pulley nut
