The autos tend to have higher emissions and that's normally what tips it over to the next tax band.

It's similar in Sweden. The current system has no tax bands, but the tax is more or less proportional to the CO2 emissions.

I've just driven back after 2 week holiday in the French Alps where there was lots of snow (2WD D5 P3 2008 manual). My Conti TS860 tyres were brilliant, but I did need snow chains a few times to reach ski stations. It all went well, so partly put to bed my regret for not having the AWD version of my car (which is very rare). Having said that, the 2 times I got stuck recently was with my 'summer' wheels on a wet muddy field, and I feel an AWD car with all-season tyres would have been OK. In the UK, I'm more likely to be in muddy fields than in lots of snow, so I just need to be careful when camping with the kids, as it's not like I can fit snow chains when on a muddy field ! (I wouldn't be carrying them). You probably already know this, but the V70 is very comfortable for long drives. I did Geneva to Dunkerque in 12 hours, only stopping for toilet breaks - felt fine throughout. The V70 was completely unfazed by the 2500 mile trip - really impressive. M5 D5 loves Total Excillium fuel, which is easy to find in France. I'm sure the XC70 would be the same, but my preference (if you can find one) would be a AWD V70 D5 manual. My annual DVLA license is £230.

What about a D3 DRIVe 2.0?
Is it still Volvo or is it ford engine? Any good? Or is there any other motor fitted to 2WD XC70/DRIVe?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Engine_Architecture There's a summary in the intro, and then full details in the Diesel section. If Im reading it correctly, they phased out Ford 4 pots and now only have their own engines - but hopefully someone else here will clarify.

Some of the information is market dependent too. We have two XC70 AWD in the family, one 2012 and one 2016. Both are five cylinder 2.4 l diesels. D4 with 181 hp, D5 with 230 hp.
The Wikipedia link above claims that only the 60-series had five cylinder engines in 2016, but that was perhaps true in the UK. |

It's about engines, not cars, so consumption figures can't be listed.
