Childlocking type behaviour on passenger side doors...
Hi All,
Well firstly, I hope everyone has had a good Christmas break so far! I’ve mentioned this problem on my new owner thread, but thought I’d open it up properly. I’ve got an odd thing going on with my central locking, which I can only describe as being like childlocking being set. The central locking works fine from both fob and interior switches, and I have it set to auto lock when driving away, however passengers can’t open the doors with the double-pull method; the handle works, and the locking pin goes up, but then back down again. The only way to get out is to use the lock/unlock switch on either front door. I need to point out that the driver’s door is fine and works perfectly from the double-pull and I can get out as normal. Once in a blue moon, the passenger front door also works, but then suffers the same symptoms again. I did a little further investigation today after the passenger door worked for a moment, and I was also able to open the rear doors from the inside at the same time, ruling out childlocking being set. Now, when the passenger front door stopped opening again, so did the rear door on the same side, but the driver’s side rear door can still be opened from the inside. From this, I think I’ve isolated the issue to being on the passenger side only. Further investigation leads me to believe there are relays for the central locking in the driver’s footwell, so I’m guessing that maybe one of these is up the swanny, but I can’t seem to find which one it would be. The other thing I know is that both passenger doors and rear wheel arch have been resprayed at some point, but looking at the panel alignment, I reckon this was a scratch repair, rather than anything more serious, but I do wonder if anything may have been disconnected? Apart fromthis odd problem, the locks work fine otherwise, as do the windows, so I don’t think it can be too difficult to sort, but any ideas greatly received! Thanks, Nick |

What you're describing with the passenger door not opening on the double pull (as drivers does) appears to standard behaviour (or at least many owners report that theirs behave the same). From what I've read on here, several other Volvo models also work this way. I just get in the habit of pressing the unlock button before the other half gets a chance to try to rip the handle off .

Morning Simon,
Many thanks for the reply, and until I played about yesterday, I had thought this was normal (and thanks for the more detailed info you posted in my other thread!). It’s the fact that both driver’s side rear door can be opened with the double-pull that’s thrown this in to question, along with the rare and random ability to open the front passenger door too! Cheers, Nick |

Are you 100% sure the rear drivers side door is actually locked when you try to open it? Try it with external handle first. Mine wasn't locking at all and I've read of several other folk reporting same failure.

Yep, checked after reading your reply, driver’s side rear is definitely locked.
If I manually lock each door by pushing the pin down, I can open them with the double-pull, so I’m pretty certain I’ve isolated the issue to the passenger side doors, and only when the locks are operated electrically, either by the front door switches, key fob or auto locking. Cheers, Nick |

Inspired by this thread, I've now done some extensive testing of a lot of combinations of locking scenarios and settings.
There's definitly something wrong with your car. The only thing that will prevent opening the doors from the inside is childlocking the rear doors. Otherwise, they'll always open if you pull once (not locked) or twice (when locked) on the inside handle. Always. No matter what you did before to lock them. |

Hi apersson850,
That’s dedication, thank you! Now stupidly, I didn’t book mark it or email the page to myself, but came across a thread a couple of nights ago and the OP had identical problems and tracked it down to the motors in the door lock being full of grease and cleaned them out, or something like that...to be honest I was the best part into of a bottle of wine, so I was more excited to have found the thread than actually doing anything about saving it!!! Anyway, I’m pretty certain the thread was on this forum, but I’ve searched so many over the past couple of weeks I can’t remember, but it’s out there somewhere! On the other hand, I should just check whether my warranty covers it, especially as it’s a safety issue... Thanks again for taking the time to do your own investigation. Nick |

I knew I wasn’t going mad!
Looks like Model Flyer had the same issue and fixed it himself some time ago: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...ight=door+lock @ Simon Jones, maybe this will help you too, as yours is doing the same? Cheers, Nick |

Thanks for your post Cubbington and ever since you OP'd I have been looking for the post you described which I found about the same time as you but, without the benefit of the wine, and I did not bookmark it either! Whilst appreciative of Model Flyers input the post I am thinking of gave you a blow by blow and even a link to where to buy suitable motors, which from memory looked like an FF-M20 motor you can find on ebay. Has any one got an old assembly which they can see the motor part No for, it would be good to have one to hand in case I am not as adept as Model Flyer? Thanks
