Juddering/skitting on full lock.
Hi.
First post in a while. Wife's XC 2006 seems to skitter when on tight/full lock. It feels like all the geometry is messed up, got only knows what it's doing to the tyres. This is mainly felt when turning into a parking space or onto/off the drive. It's just sailed through the the MOT and it's been doing it for as long as I can remember. Drives perfect at all other times, no fault codes or anything else. Any ideas? |

Mine has done this since I bought it 7 years ago, so I assume it is normal. As you say, it only happens at full lock and it feels like one wheel is skidding or slipping.
I find it is more noticeable when I have the standard (for my car) 19 wheels on than when I have the 18 wheels with winter tyres fitted.

Quite common, if its got noticeably worse then check front wishbone bushes.

Get a proper 4 wheel alignment done , I had the "car park skip" ... 4 wheel alignment done ... never had the skip since.
Worth doing anyway, you would be amazed in the difference and the lack of badly worn tyres. ... about £75'ish from someone with Hunter alignment kit. Hope it helps

Guessing wishbone bushes
Mine was doing this, same year about 120 000 mikes, so i swapped the wish bones and the bushes were really distorted.
New wishbones, new bolts (essential as they are stretch bolts), and alignment cured it. (almost), as there is sometimes a tiny judder when manoeuvring in my drive, but nothing like it was. Tyres are an issue as well as I find the Bridgestone's i now have much harder than the previous Michelins. Just remember only use genuine Volvo bits, or one specifically recommended by someone on this site as I think there is only one decent OEM bush manufacturer.

My XC60 started similar about 2 months ago, 2 years old and 22000 miles. Just replaced the front tyres, waiting for snow-free to see if it has really gone. It didn't jump and judder as I drove around on Thursday after the tyre change, have avoided going out since.
The tyre shop said the tyres were old (week 15 of 2015), and that 3 years is becoming common for problems and cracks etc due to age! Tracking check showed correct alignment. |
