Default Slight roll when shifting from foot brake to hand brake

Hi everyone,

My first post. I bought my 2007 mk2 V70 2.4D a couple of weeks ago at a low price from a secondhand car dealer in Blackburn. Seems to be a good car, just a few queries so far. The first concerns the hand brake. I have seen there are many threads here about hand brakes and I have read some of them but none are quite like this.

The hand brake holds after three clicks and is good, better than my previous car, but, say for example I am coming to a stop going up a steep hill, I use the foot brake to stop and then apply the hand brake. The hand brake handle clicks three times, there is tension in the brake cable and I lift off the foot brake... there is a moment where the wheels roll back a few degrees before the hand brake shoes grip the wheels. The car rolls back an inch or so, nothing more, but it is disconcerting - and then the wheels stop like they should. After that it's fine. Same applies when applying the hand brake facing down hill.

Anyone else experienced this, do I need to worry, and if so what is required to fix it?

Thanks,

Mike

They basically all do this. Its a characteristic of the car.

It has a seperate drum brake system for the handbrake thats integrated into the rear disks.

You couldnt have read many of those threads, cause everybody seems to mention this behavior!!

On the plus side the handbrake is extremely good, once engaged...

Default Handbrake behaviour is normal

^^^ Beat me to it..!
Rolling back slightly is normal for these cars. It is caused by the design of the actuator and link in the disc’s hub allowing the shoes to move slightly before meeting their stops. Quite normal but may take a bit of getting used to.
So long as the brakes hold okay and you cannot hear any ‘scraping’ sounds when driving (caused by broken retaining springs trapped in the drum) then all should be fine.
There’s lots on this forum about the handbrake including a pinned thread at the top of the page.

Mine too. My Toyota used to move loads on one wheel, but it always passed the MOT as once stopped it was locked good and proper.

Same here. It makes hill starts a bit easier. You can get moving before releasing the handbrake
