Default Ignition Coil Paks

As I like to have a preventative maintenance program for my 2001 S80 2.9L, I want to test my coils to see if they're still good.

Do they slowly fail or just quit?

I tested three coils by probing the four contacts. Mind you, I was just randomly testing/playing and saw that two coils had very similar values registering. The third one was registering a higher number. So something is wrong.

Out of these three coils, do I have to replace one or two of them?

Any testing procedures out there?

Great question I also would like to know. Can one simply energize the coil and see the length of spark?

Unlike on other cars, the original Volvo ones rarely fail, even at high mileage. Usually one will fail, with the rest still being good. It shows as hesitation under hard acceleration at motorway speed. After market ones are a big gamble, and original ones are on the expensive side. Used original ones are the better bet.

I had one pack up out of the blue on my 2.0t last month as I was accelerating onto a motorway. I still made it home on 4 cylinders (just). It's not a coil pack, so you can change them individually. I swapped mine for a Bosch OE standard part for ~€50.
