C70 roof failure service required
Hey guys,
The dreaded day has finally arrived! Roof will not go down when I press the button, the boot opens and does it cycle (although once it didn't complete the boot opening cycle before the message appeared), but the roof does nothing, and I get roof failure service required message. Anyone any experience with this, how to diagnose what could be the fault, or typical costs at a garage? Any help would be appreciated. Have tried using it the past few days, and has never opened (fortunate it broke in the up position), so its a consistent fault. Cheers Phil

Vida has a diagram all the sensors and switches, and a spreadsheet of their expected readings at each step of the opening/closing procedure... and you can also read off the actual positions... there’s almost certainly a code stored telling you which part of the system is tripping the maintenance required flag...
Beyond that there is a breakout box can be used to test/diagnose the CRM, but as far as I know that is a dealer only tool, it would likely be quicker, cheaper and easier to source a replacement from a breakers yard than attempt diagnosis/repair. Best of luck, and let us know how it turns out for you. Afterthought: It is also possible to narrow down what has gone wrong by the point in the process that it stops working. After I installed my SmartTop module mine was not moving at all... throwing the maintenance required error immediately after the windows dropped. Pulling the CRM out and examining it, I found that I had bent one of the pins, and was able to bend it back into shape and, knock wood, no issues since. Sounds like yours is failing after the boot opens but before the roof unlatches... could be the sensor that signals the CRM that the boot is fully open, or something in the roof locking mechanism Last edited by Sysyphus; Jun 4th, 2018 at 14:38. |

Difficult to say you must get codes read
I had one once where it wouldn't open so manually opened it to find cable at rear Sierra and latch arm bent . Look at vida try calibration |

Unfortunately I only have 2 generic fault readers, one being a elm327 that uses an phone app. Tried a few apps, but none of them seem to be seeing any fault codes.
So I imagine its a vida specific thing.

VIDA and Dice are essential here with 17 sensors to check out , I would say the problem is 90% a broken wire where it bends rather than the actual sensor which would be picked up in a fault code .

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, the boot lid opens but the second part that extends out of the boot only goes about half way before stopping, so its likely a cable around there.
Will need to dig up some schematics for the wiring layout, and see if I can borrow a multi meter to check the cables.

Been having a play around, and reading https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/c7...ullDetails.pdf (Very good doc)
I think a connection to s12 is gone, as when it stops, if I play with that cable and press the close roof button, it works straight away (and once forgot the roof was broken after it closed). Question is, anyone know if you can order replacement cable, part numbers or anything?
