Default 2010 C30 2.0d alternator - 120A or 150A?

Does anyone know which alternator is likely fitted to a 2010 C30 2.0d?

Pretty sure it's on the way out and wouldn't mind trying to replace it myself, but I've heard that:
a) If it has a 120A alternator, it should be upgraded to 150A
b) This would require a software update to the car's ECU

That means that I probably won't be able to do this job myself if it is a 120A.

Thanks for any help

you will need either the part number from the existing alternator, or call up volvo and get it from your cars original spec. Lots of things seem to affect what was fitted to the car so it's the only sure fire way. This was discussed on a number of threads, and I don't recall anyone else coming up with a solution. Have your battery checked, and your aux belt and tensioner checked before you assume it's a bad alternator.

Thanks for your input.

The first symptom which made me check the alternator was a whining noise at low revs. Then checked the battery with a multimeter: 12.2V when engine off and cold (not driven for 5 days), and slowly climbed up to 14V when idling. I then put all of the lights and cabin electronics on and it struggled to get above 12V. Alternator was also too hot to touch after a couple of minutes of idling.

Do you think that could still be one of the other things you mentioned?

at 12.2v it could be a bad cell in the battery. I don't know the effect this would have on the alternator, but it would be enough for me to get a load tester on the battery before shelling out for a new alternator. I believe 12.6 v is fully charged on a new healthy battery. 12.3 is basically depleted, anything down to 12v and the battery could be bad. There are voltage tables as ambient temperature has an effect on the voltage. at 12.2 it could be a discharged good battery, or just a bad battery. Bad batteries cause all sorts of electrical gremlins. I beleive 14 to 14.4v is considered normal for the alternator

That what happened to mine, very hot and making a noise on start up. Vida indicated 150 amp unit and you could also read the label on the old one.

Thanks for your advice guys.

Replaced the battery today and the situation didn't improve. On the plus side, I managed to spy a label on the alternator which said '12V 150A'. Looks like I should be able to replace it myself. Any tips?

if the bolts look corroded, soak em in penetrating fluid day before. Also, check pretensioner or aux belt. If doing alternator, maybe do that at same time.

Check prices from a few places before buying.
I saves around £50 buying the exact same part from carparts4less as opposed to ecp
