740 Turbo Oil Leak
After giving our 740 turbo a high speed run we stopped and a lot of oil appeared straight away under the car
It was still running perfect and no oil light on so assuming no further damage. Gonna get it on the ramps tomorrow but is there any common places to check first ? Thanks. |

The most common oil leaks on the turbo's are focused on the right hand side of the engine and are
The Feed and drain pipes to the turbo, oil filter housing and oil cooler pipes. Other leaks include Front and rear Camshaft oil seals, plus front and rear main Crank Seals. If it drops a lot whilst the engine is running then wipe clean the areas around the block where the turbo oil feed pipe is connected. And watch for leaks. If it is leaking then you'll need to replace the two copper washers on the feed pipe, sometimes the banjo bolt and the oil feed pipe(these two parts can get damaged when changing turbo's). But to get the banjo bolt out you'll need to remove the oil filter throwback to get the bolt out. Whilst there replace the rubber seal there and the large copper washer. Also put new copper washers on the oil cooler pipe connectors. Here's some pics of the area to get you familur with it. The pic below shows the Turbo Drain pipe and the Oil feed pipe, the oil feed pipe is hanging in the breeze as i was just about to connect it up to the block in this picture. The pic below shows how the oil filter throw back and oil cooler housing completey blocks getting access to the oil feed pipe connector. Yes you can get a spanner on it just, but you will not be able to remove the bolt fully. Trust me i've been there and tried. |

Thanks.
Dropped it off this morning with a mate who has his own garage. First call was to tell me it was coming out around the turbo oil pipes. I collected later and he had had all the pipes of to check and retighten. As he took one of them off he dropped the nut. As he was fishing for the nut in the crossmember he found a gasket/washer ? He looked closer at the pipe and it didn't have this gasket/washer on !! So it must have been dropped last time these pipes were off, the previous owner said it had had a slight leak for years LOL So pipes with washers/gaskets on and so far it seems ok There was me thinking it was a Volvo problem when all along it was human error |
