VoC functions without data SIM?..

When I ordered my latest Volvo I opted out of the offered Volvo data plan - and been hotspotting of my mobile for the past couple of months that I have had the car. The car has a GSM modem in the trunk - and I have checked - the SIM tray is empty. However I have realized the other day that the car still communicates with the Volvo Cars app (I can lock/unlock it, send nav destination to it, etc) with no (apparent..) data connection. Wtf?! Is it possible that the GSM modem is a dual-sim unit - one being a “virtual” sim provided by Volvo - at no expense? I have no other explanation..

That is correct, the voc module has an eSIM in it, likely also ausing Vodafone but it doesn't need your personal SIM in the slot to operate,

That slot is for you to stream music or download map data updates directly rather than use Bluetooth or WiFi to your phone

Mystery resolved, thanks rhd443! Really didn’t know that VoC subscription includes a dedicated data plan.
