Why would it make it worse removing the rear cap?

Uhh condensation... since that is the cover, that keeps the condensation out from the back, if you remove it, it is quite guaranteed, that your lights will have condensation inside sooner or later...
Mainly in this weather

Okay so I have had them fitted and done a 2 hour journey in the dark. First impressions in the S60 are good: much much whiter light, much more light. I have had to tweak the alignment down slightly. Looking at the beam pattern, I think that I will have to adjust the rotation of the bulbs to get it right, as it does seem quite uneven and misaligned at the moment. The makers have designed this into the bulbs, so I'll have a go at the weekend.

These are the ones I have:

I have run HIDS in many cars since around 2010/2011 and never had any issues.

The hole you cut in the cap just just big enough to slip the cabling through and these are tightly attached to a rubber gromit which, is slightly bigger than the hole you cut and thus, ensures a perfect seal to prevent the likes of condensation and debris getting in.

Hids without levelling are now and explicit MOT fail, aren't they?

Yes, I've got a feeling they have to have an "adequate" cleaning system too!

That's not quite the answer to the question posed though. The answer is that they are an explicit fail under the new guidelines introduced in 2018 unless fitted with the two features mentioned.

There is absolutely no ambiguity about the matter. The following statement has been taken directly from the MOT Testers Manual.

Existing halogen headlamp units shouldn't be converted to be used with HID bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the lamp.
