Can’t find one anywhere with pipes so seriously considering one of the universal 8 row coolers, a couple of questions if anyone can answer.
On the kit I’m looking at it comes with 8.5mm pipe is the Volvo one 10mm it was on the video link on this thread so would that cause flow problems. Also on the video I can’t make out which hose he pulls from the radiator is it the top or bottom hose as that’s the one I will need to cut and connect thanks a lot. Daniel |

Hi Daniel, Yes it is the top hose that gets disconnected and cut. As for the diameter difference I wouldn't imagine that it would have a massive impact. Additionally, the brass barbed connectors are available with a different size outlet at each end . In theory you could order a 10mm ( Volvo Size ) with an appropriate size on the other end

Thanks for the reply that makes life abit easier being it’s the top hose I have seen those adapters on eBay, will leave it another week to see if one comes up and if not will order one and change the oil again like the method in the video, thanks again and will keep you updated.

At a pressure of 5 bar (assumption) and a length of 1m (as a reference), a 10mm diameter pipe allows 15.056 ltrs/min flow rate Reduce the diameter to 8.5mm, leave all other parameters the same, and the flow rate reduces to 8.448 ltr/min Online calculator: https://www.copely.com/tools/flow-rate-calculator/ This is a reduction of 6.608 lts/min, or 44% So for those who think "won't make much difference": well, it does. It's 44% less flow rate for the same pressure, same pipe length. Just by reducing it from 10mm to 8.5mm diameter

Thanks for that Swiss, I can see what you are saying and the difference is indeed far larger than I would have imagined assuming of course that it is operating at 5 bar but even at 3 bar the difference is large.
My understanding is that it is a low pressure system ( or so Clan has said in the past ) Looks like Daniel may be better off getting a proper cooler and pipes and I'm also pleased that we have been able to help you differentiate between a power steering cooler and an auxiliary gearbox oil cooler. Such a wonderful forum.

Thanks for the replies that is some detailed information and probably saved my gearbox, not in a massive rush just me being impatient as usual.
Think it’s best to wait for a Volvo one so at least I know it will fit properly and the fluid can flow correctly thanks again all plenty of help as always will keep you updated as and when I can get hold of one. Daniel |
