Default Volvo XC90 Engine System Service Required

Car: Volvo XC90 D5 186k km 2008
Car was not driven for more than 6 months.
Recently had oil change (is at ¾ on dip stick) timing belt, all other fluids, push rods and glow plugs.
Runs excellent most of the time but then the “Engine System Service Required” lights comes on and the car runs like it lost about 80% of its power almost limp mode but I got it in manual mode up to 100km per/h, then next day or next start the car runs normal but the “Engine System” warning still on, then it goes away and all repeats in a day or so. Also on two occasions when I started the car the engine raved up to 4000rpm and same thing happen week later when pulled on traffic lights about a minute after starting the car. Odometer button press revealed code “042”.
Will get the car scanned next week sometimes.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Jason,
When you get your car scanned post up the codes and that will give everyone here a better idea of the cause of the issue. Is it being scanned with VIDA?
If you have a look at the link below (just paste it into your browser) it lists all of the codes and might help in the meantime.

the only '042' I'm seeing on that list that makes any sense to me would be..

P0042 – Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) 3, bank 1, heater control-(Possible Cause)-circuit malfunction-Wiring, HO2S, ECM

don't take that as gospel or anything but you could check the plug connection and clean up terminals at least, that wont cost anything to rule out

not sure if that would cause limp mode or just the warning light

there are methods of testing them with a voltmeter but I find that a bit inconclusive tbh, I had a scooby which threw up this fault, tested fine but when I replaced it the fault went away

I think the 042 will be the module storing a code rather than the actual DTC.

There’s a way of finding out what modules have codes stored on the dashboard. Can’t remember how or what though.

hold stalk button, fog button x 2

cycle through modules with stalk button

set = fault stored
ready = clear

i imagine it just just say CEM = SET and it you're not really the wiser, you need VIDA really don't you

VIDA is defo the way to go. Bought mine about a month ago. Awesome bit of kit and I can see exactly whats going on.
Would highly recommend buying off of the forum member. Just look in the Sales link.

Push rods? I didn't know the diesels were that different.
