Default Corrosion on chrome trim.

https://youtu.be/2R4nORsWA6s

There is the carwow review detailing the mottling/corrosion of the chrome trim around the windows. I have the exact same issue (see attached). It is only effecting the window trim, every other bit of chrome is perfect.

Volvo are saying its a PH issue with my cleaning products, and not a manufacturing defect, and refusing to replace. Now I use a PH neutral snow foam (which I buy wholesale in 25L drum - had current supply for 18mths), and Autoglym bug remover and macguires wax. I have used these products for years, with no issues until I bought the Volvo. Indeed, I had no issues during the cars first 10 or so washes, then it started.

Any advice on what to do. I don't feel I am doing anything out of the ordinary, and my trim should not be corroding using fairly standard cleaning products.

Car was registered April 2018, and an XC60 inscription.

If you are sure your products are good, I'd tell the dealer you are considering rejecting the car, that should stop them trying to fob you off.

Your products sound good - unless you’ve the tfr type snow foam that dissolves brake dust.

I would suggest the PDI valet products may be at issue here.

You wouldn’t be using bug remover on that trim anyway, so its foam, shampoo and wax.

That kind of damage looks like wonder wheels acid burns

Hi,

I know the original poster referenced Carwow, but not sure if you have seen the video : https://youtu.be/2R4nORsWA6s

I've been using Ultimate Snow Foam from Ultimate Finish for at least 2 years during every wash (on average once a fortnight) and I haven't had any issues at all.

I think this is just another example of the varied aftercare you get from Volvo dealers. I imagine if I took it to my dealer with the supporting evidence from Carwow they would replace under warranty with no issues.

You can't reject a car for some iffy trim! the dealer is more likely to laugh at him if he takes this route.

I had an issue with the lower chrome strip on my car, the bit with Inscription on it, they replaced it no problem.

My argument would be if its the cleaning products then why isn't all of it doing the same. There is a video on Youtube where Matt of CarWow had the same issue with his XC60!

The bug spray I use on the wing mirrors, but you get a little after spray. Either way there is no issue on the chrome on the front of the car. I use alloy cleaner, but I have not sprayed that anywhere near the chrome. Hard to mix up too, as its a pink liquid - bug remover is clear (and in an autoglym bottle), however..... given you get insects often where there is chrom trim (bumpers, grille, etc), I'd expect autoglym have this stuff well checked!

However, the bug spray isnt spraying from the wing mirrors to the top of the rear windows, and theres cortosion there too, so I can rule that out.

As said it is only the window trim effected.

The only other procts I use on the glass are Rainex and Stoner Invisible Glass - both well respected, common products, used by thousands upon thousands of people. I have used a maguires quick detail product as well, but again - an off the shelf product used commonly.

I'm of the opinion that car trim should be fairly robust, and not corrode with minor misuse (which I don't think I've done). If I turn up my snowfoam gun to high to get it very foamy, I don't expect there to be a possibility of chrome corrosion.

I've cleaned my cars pretty much the same way for 10yrs.

And looking at the photos, that's nothing to do with product, thats a manufacturing defect where moisture gets trapped between the chrome and the clear coat finish, your dealer is talking mince!

I cannot understand dealers who dismiss stuff like this and try to wriggle out of sorting it, Volvo pay them to deal with warranty issues. I would go back to your dealer and tell them they need to send the images to Volvo, who will replace the trim.

What you've got is a lazy dealer who thinks they are doing themselves or Volvo a favour, drives me nuts!

If there is another dealer nearby go to them and talk to the service manager and explain your predicament, dealers love hearing how other dealers are crap lol!

My car is a lease car btw, and whilst leased via a Volvo dealer, through Volvo Finance - I didn't get it from a local dealer.

However on purchase I was assured any dealer could deal with servicing and warranty issues.

This may explain the dealers not caring.

Mine is leased too. We use Arval, if the dealer won't play ball, tell your leasing company, they will and should kick ass.

I don't get it, you've got a Volvo, where its funded from or how shouldn't make a blind bit of difference. I told my dealer I wouldn't accept being treated any differently, seems to be working so far. My car was in for 4 days recently whilst they sorted the rattling rear armrest/cupholder issue.

As you're based in Scotland, tell your dealer you won't take any pish!
