Pricing advice please

Hi All,

So I’m still on the hunt for a V70r and I’ve found a 2005 model and it’s just what I want. Problem is it’s a bit of a unicorn. It’s 1 owner, 31000 miles and is a UK model. I do want it, but the very best I’ve seen any adjusted valuations is just short of £5k less than the seller wants. I don’t doubt the car is priced as it’s rare, the issue is I can’t get insurance for the car that would pay any more than market value, even with specialists.
So my question is, is £15k too much for this car and what would you do, especially with regards to the huge gap in insurance vs price I’d pay. Most value the car on paper at £5k which I know is rubbish too 🤷🏻

I am assuming that is a rare manual for that price (which is still very very high) however you are asking others (the insurance company) to value it as high as you do and in liklyhood they may not wish to.

I think there would be very few people prepared to pay that money.

The best bet may be to look for a specialist broker with an agreed price policy.

I am always minded of the following saying… ‘there is only 1 thing rarer than a rare coin, and that’s a buyer for a rare coin’.

Now granted there are not many V70R for sale with 31K but they are very robust vehicles and there are a lot with way under 75k miles for many many thousands less than you are looking.

It’s not my speciality that particular model but it does sound like a premium price?

Only my opinion, I am sure others on here will know more than me?

I think that’s the issue. It is too pricey. Sadly not a manual, which is by far what I’d prefer. Although I know I’d have to compromise. It’s a geartronic, great condition…but I think 10 is far more realistic. I also take your point that a 70/80k one would equally fit my bill

Walk away for now. Given the impending financial melt down in housing, mortgages etc the price is likely to come down a lot.

Bear in mind as well, it's not just mileage that you have to consider but also age

17 years is not a short time and various things will need looking at regardless how mint it looks on the outside and interior.. granted both of those things are strong selling points but personally I would say pass on it (or at least look at alternatives)

sub 100k cars are perfectly fine and Im sure you could find one with strong service histories, kept active over the years which is good for a lot of the working parts, and you'll find they'll have had a lot of the usual things already done, new wishbones, springs etc, timing belt and so on

of course it never hurts to make what you think is a reasonable offer and be very clear that you're not desperate to buy, if no-one else shows any interest you might get a call

It's an automatic and a Japanese import. No idea what to value these at.

I got my 2003 V70 R in Flash Green for £4500 about 8 months ago (with a spare pair of new Monroe shocks thrown in for free). It has done considerably more miles at 175,000 but had been serviced by Volvo for the first 168,000 of them. I still bit the sellers hand off as it's definitely a dream car - always makes me smile when I see it parked outside.
