Default Climate Control - Damper Motor?

My S80 is at Lakes Autos (again...) at the moment and they report a fault code with the damper motor.

Apparently this motor sits deep in the dash behind the radio and moves a flap which directs warm air/cold air into the rest of the ventilation ducting. I'm guessing this is the same set up for all P2 Volvos.

This flap not working properly and presumably being partially open explains why my car only makes a passing attempt at blowing warm air. Over winter I was having to set the temperature dials at 24 each side to get warm air, and even then it never really got as hot as I'd expect a car built to cope with a Swedish winter to get.

I'm confident that the thermostat, heater matrix, fan, and pollen filter are all ok.

Has anyone had this problem and resolved it? Any cheap fixes?

I am assuming you do not have Vida and DiCE to run a diagnostic session via the OBD2 port. I suggest you ask around on this site if there is anyone who lives within travelling distance to you who does and is willing to scan your car. There is a comprehensive section for the Climate Control including the facillity to reset all the dampers. When this is activated one can quite clearly hear the action being applied and the level at which the recirculation fan speed runs is reset. I think it is unlikely your flap motor has failed but if so the software will confirm this with a fault code. My car is 15 years old but this CC system is still working like new, so I don't see why yours shouldn't. All I have had done is have the aircon recharged and reset the dampers using Vida. Running a diagnostic as simpler than trying to reach into the physical innards which are, as you say, burried away.

provides some reading around the subject - Dual Climate Control acting up in particular gives a flavour of what recalibration can do. The last post, Hot air blowing from the vents ... is also very helpful in explaining how to clear codes and recalibrate.
Good luck

On Vida with Dice connected, Diagnostics > Vehicle Communication > CCM (on vehicle overhead diagram) > Activations or Advanced.

I think the link is falling because it only works if you are loged in, there is of course nothing to stop you registering, it is free and a great site.
