i did .i used to get 34 with the small turbo but now i have the large turbo its doing more like 36 to 38 on the motorway and an average of 28 round town.mainly due to the turbo not kicking in till 3krpm .its all down to the way you drive the car to get decent fuel economy ,but dont get me wrong if i put my foot down i recon i could get it to 10 or less lol.

That's interesting. I'd love to get 36 to 38 out of my non-turbo. My driving style is somewhere between old dear and typical commuter. I tend to come up through the gears as early as I can, I rarely go over about 60% throttle, and usually keeps the revs below 4000 rpm. I keep my tyres well inflated and try to find a suitable cruising speed rather than constantly speeding up and slowing down, yet still I'm lucky to get 30mpg.

Does this mean my motor needs work do you think? I read on another thread how someone improved their mpg by replacing their worn out lambda sensor, and I once found the official mpg figures for the 940 which suggested they could do 38 mpg. Of course, the 700/900s are old now so they will have lost some efficiency, but it would be nice to get some back.

740GL MY 1990 B200E

Best ever: 39MPG - Countryside driving (very light foot, speed not over 80km/h, only driver, extremely economic driving)

Relaxed long distance driving: Somewhere around 31-32 MPG

City, lots of traffic: Around 26 MPG or so

City, winter driving to work (5km): 22 MPG

Fully loaded car (5 persons), highway, around 170km/h: 18 MPG

Default Fuel Consumption

Its not every day that you see the words "940" and "Fuel Economy" in the same sentence. I can get about 400 miles out of a tank of petrol [when the light comes on for a bit]which probably equates to 26 or 27mpg which is how I have voted. The car is an 8 valve HPT GLE spec car with 160,000 miles. I reckon my car is one of the heaviest with 7 seats, glass sunroof, auto, cruise control, all the other bits and pieces and especially with me in it. Some of the later and lighter cars are bound to have the edge on our Grunhilda.
I have owned the car for many years and the fuel consumption has never changed much. I like the thought of zero depreciation and the fact that I can avoid dealers for nearly everything except for the aircon recharge, tyres and an MOT and then I go to independents. Why recycle something that is this cheap to run except for its little weakness for unleaded?

In my '91 940 2.3 16V GLE estate manual, my best was approx 36mpg on motorways with 5 people and a pretty empty boot.
Average round town however, is usually around 23 - 24.
Though with recent engine problems it's more like 15.
So i have clicked 35+ even though the average is way below that.

I'm starting to get the impression that 35+ is achievable. Next question is how?

On the 35+ ones, are we seeing differences of gear box? I ask that because I'm sure my gear box is optimised for towing, because the gear ratios seem to be lower than they need to be for normal day to day use. For example at 70mph, the revs are at 3000rpm, which on a normally aspirated 8v engine, is the rate at which you typically get maximum air flow (and therefore fuel flow).
