That price is delivered too, AND it is already separated. It'll be getting a good dollop of grease before it goes back on.

So ... I've currently spent £355 (£180 on stuff I wanted anyway after my old jack and axle stands were nicked) to change a £6 part.

And I haven't had the garage bill yet
£155???? Went today for same (05 xc90 D5awd) and was charged £200! AND it was the wrong one! Was a slightly thinner, shorter shaft with a different end on! As these shafts seem to be like rocking horse sh*t to find, I took the c.v joint apart on wheel end and put that on my original shaft. Bloody annoying and what should have been an hours work, took me all afternoon!

Price for same parts today.........£200 not delivered! And it was the wrong shaft! New shaft was shorter, thinner and different end! As these seem to be like rocking horse sh*t to find, I opted to take the c v joint apart, wheel end, and fitted this to my original shaft. So, £140 for a shaft just to use the cv joint! And the hassle of taking it apart!

Thanks for the advice in this thread. Just replaced ring today and all working fine. Two independent garages told me replacing the ring would probably not be possible and I would need a new driveshaft costing £400-500.

Hardest part was getting the strutt bolts undone and yes you can do with just undoing the top one and loosening the top one. It makes access to the driveshaft to get the new ring on tricky but can be done. Also definitely don't need to remove the ABS sensor - just unclip it.

I heated up the new ring in the oven but wouldn't slide on easily. Maybe the driveshaft was too rusty and I didn't clean it enough or maybe just not hot enough. Anyway managed to knock it on gradually using brute force. All fine now and saved a lot of money. Maybe it won't last but good enough to get through next MOT.

Ive checked today my drive shaft to see if all well after ABS ring replacement.
I see some movements in the dirve shaft where the cv boot meets the HUB. The movement is horizontal, in and out 3-4 mm. Is this normal. The other drive shaft near side has no movements at all(but then its splines are stuck with the hub) .
I tightened the driveshaft bolt to 35NM and further tightened to 120 Degree.
The bolt itself is tight and not loose.
Can some one please advice me if this is normal or Do I have to re tighten the drive shaft bolt.

There should not be any movement.
Did you replace the drive shaft retaining bolt?
They are strictly single use and should be replaced whenever they are disturbed.
They are not too expensive from your local friendly dealer.

I didnt replace it with new one though. Thanks for that. I will buy volvo croydon near by me.
There was a rubber bush some thing like that in that bolt. Will that affect the torque?

Thank you.

I replaced the bolt with a new one yesterday.
Strange the 3-4 mm lateral movement was there at the outer cc joint where it mates with the splines.
The bolt itself is very tight. I over torqued it and snapped the head , hoping that tightening will cure the movement.
I drilled the snapped bolt using an extractor. Lucky on that.
Iam thinking that this movement was was already there in the car before I replaced the ring . Someone put double washer on the driveshaft bolt and also used custom made bolt to fit into the driveshaft by cutting the length of the bolt.

Now my question is what makes the shaft move laterally. Please some experts here on the forum shed some lights so I can cure it.

Iam inclined to some one fitted a bit longer drive shaft so even if the shaft is tightened properly or some one adjusted the camber might inserted extra washer in the bolt.
Thank you.

I've attached the picture of the shaft from Google. The green arrow is the place where the lateral axial play is. Which means it is sliding 3 mm in the splines with the bolt also moving. As I said the bolt is torqued to 35nm and further angle tightend to 120 Degree.

Thank you.
