Oh...this is going to get nerdy

Good question. You may well know better than me. I've not checked the car's dates, but I assumed that on a V plate (so Sept 79-Aug 80) it would be a 80MY, but now you've said that, I guess it could have been a late-registered 79MY car.

It's something I've wondered about since I picked up my 1980 345 (also a V-plate). Previously, I assumed that the "little" alterations (older badges, side-mounted interior light, different interior door handles, older fusebox, etc) happened at the same time as the bumpers (the obvious difference), since the V-reg and W-reg cars were different in all of these details.

However, all of the above "little" stuff (badges, etc) is "late" on my 1980 345, but it has the earlier "stubby" bumpers.

In other words, are you saying it goes like this...

79: Stubby bumpers, older badges, side-mounted interior light, different interior door handles, older fusebox, etc.
80: Stubby bumpers, later-style badges, front-mounted interior light, later interior door handles, newer fusebox, etc.
81: Longer (mk2-style) bumpers, and all of the little details from the 80MY car.

You tell me...as I'm not sure. I've been wondering the same, but thought perhaps the 345 was just a 'transitional' car. Having it as three defined model years would make more sense though, and the silver 343 may well be old enough to be a 79MY car.

I've recently been thinking about keeping the blue 345 (as an all-year-round beater) and selling the silver car (which only has 11k on the clock). I've somehow bonded better with the 345...

Serious nerd overload. I think we've just lived up to all the worst car enthusiast stereotypes

cheers

James

Hello James
Yes you are right with the below:
79: Stubby bumpers, older badges, side-mounted interior light, different interior door handles, older fusebox, etc.
80: Stubby bumpers, later-style badges, front-mounted interior light, later interior door handles, newer fusebox, etc.
81: Longer (mk2-style) bumpers, and all of the little details from the 80MY car.

In those days ( i was there ! ) volvo model years changed not long before the number plate change in this country so yours would be a left over 1979 model year . What is the date of first registration ? 1979 was the first model year to have the manual gearbox and "volvo" type dash, 1978 was the DAF style.
I guess that silver 343 has a perfect rust-free body shell?
There was rapid development with the 343 from 1976 until the new shape came in 1982 changing it's DAF origins to Volvo ... and various details were carried over or deleted at each model year change ,..

Thanks for the clarification. I'll have to update accordingly!

The silver 343 isn't perfect in terms of the welded-in panels (see blemish on the rear arch in that photo), but it's pretty damn good. The bolt-on panels aren't so good (both doors have minor rust at the top, wings are a bit scruffy, and the front panel is totally knackered!), but at least they can be replaced easily.

cheers

James
