Cheers mate, does that mean every time you go to the European mainland you have to load the disc? Sorry for asking what appears to be a stupid question, but my S60 RTI Satnag covered Uk and Eu....

Some models got a new navigation system in 2010 (model year 2011). This new system had a hard disk, to which all the maps were copied on install. You could then drive across the whole area covered (basically Europe + Turkey) and have maps available. The DVD (later USB memory) with the maps were not required when using the navigator in the car.
Before that, you had to change to another DVD, if you drove outside the coverage of the DVD currently in the car. Without any DVD in the car, you had no maps at all. It's this system, requiring the DVD to be present, that you have. |

Yet amazingly our 2002 S60 had the RTI satnag and we drove from uk to eastern Germany and never had to change discs at all, it seems the system has gone backwards....

The area in which the sat nav will work is governed by the decision of the developers as to what areas they include on the disc. There is no reason why some areas should be on one disc and others on another apart from the capacity of the system to read the data on the disc. I used to have a car with a disc operated sat nav and it was possible, while they were available, to buy various discs at differing prices of maps of parts of Europe, maps of all of western Europe and maps of eastern Europe. I don't know what areas and what groupings the sat nav designers made but you could try shopping around on the internet for second hand discs to see what areas are available.

There are typically many more items on the maps today than 15 years ago.

RTI SatNav 2010 S80 D5 Se Lux
Hi all,
Well drove back from Aachen in Germany today and thought I’d use the RTI SatNav using the last ten addresses to get us home. Well, we had full map coverage and the system even took us around hold-ups saving about an hour on the journey, so to say there was CD in the drive unit for Germany and Belgium, the coverage was exactly the same as in the UK. Just as an aside, we covered 800 miles round trip, there were no de-restricted autobahns ☹️ The max speed being 75 mph through France and Belgium. According to the driver info it’s averaged 41.8 mpg, which wasn’t the best but it does have the Polestar upgrade but even driving like a Nun on mogadon I couldn’t improve on that figure, ah well never mind. Merry Christmas to you all. Rgds Gary Salisbury |
