In general working practice you can get away with 2 sets of pads per disc before they get down to the minimum specified thickness , if you are wearing yours out as fast as pads you must be using the brakes too much :-)
New volvos have had covers over the discs for at least 25 years , most likely more.

OK, so my experience with Volvo is not good when it comes to brake pads

On my V50 at the 37.5K service they said all needed doing before the next service. I checked myself when swapping to winter wheels a month or two later and found that they had loads of life left. I actually got to just over 70k on the fronts and never had to change the rears before I traded for the XC60

On the XC, I'm finding that the rears are wearing more quickly than the fronts so currently on just over 38K and I think I'll need to do them in the next 2-3K

Don't get Volvo to do them anyway as they charge a fortune for what is a simple job that any garage can do or is not even that hard to do yourself

I have always changed discs/pads myself on my cars.

Anything special about changing the rear brakes as never changed one with an electric handbrake before. Or is just as simple and not engaging the parking brake?

My mate has a merc and the parking brake had to be disengaged via software to change the rear discs and pads.

Thanks
Garry
