I only see the delay if I floor my xc90, if I just slowly depress the pedal I get a smooth take off. To be honest the thing is not a race car so why would I shove it into a gap so small I would have to accelerate like a mad man to get into?
In gear umphhh is great! |

Following a lengthy conversation with the head of the Vehicle Safety Branch this morning they feel that even though they witnessed 1 of my major safety issues they feel that there is no real danger with the hesitation on the xc90. Volvo have explained that they have not seen any real problems of this nature and are not planning to look into the matter any further. Ah the joys...........

I mentioned the possibilty of someone dying through this eventually and I get the feeling that asses are covered there and would be down to VCUK.........

Hi all - not sure if any of you have read the new XF jag diesel review by Clarkson???
He makes a very interesting point about delayed pulling away... "There is just one tiny problem, and, weirdly, it affects the Range Rover diesel too. When you pull away from a standstill, it feels like the throttle cable has snapped. So you give the pedal a hefty shove, which means that you lunge onto the roundabout at the precise moment you decide the gap’s not big enough. Apparently, this is a software problem that can be cured. I wish it would be. " The complete article can be read here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/dri...cle6725766.ece Funnily enough he also mentions how bad the diesel engine is in the XC90!!! I suppose compared to the 3.0 bmw and audi it is!!! Last edited by artwilliam; Jul 30th, 2009 at 13:04. |

This is precisely the feeling we experience - the only reason a fatal accident hasn't been reported is that we XC90 drivers learn VERY quickly not to do it again. The point is - we shouldn't have to take such action to counteract this fault. |

My wifes 55 plate XC90 D5 SE had this exact problem - I used to loathe driving it because of the lag, and the general high revs you'd get on the motorway.
We recently returned that car at the end of the 3 year PCP and I was actually against buying another XC90 for this, and a couple of other reasons (mostly electrical problems). However, my wife tried a few other 7 seat SUVs (Audi Q7 / LR Discovery3) but still preferred the XC90. Reluctantly, last week I bought her a MY08 XC90 D5 Exec and took it out for a test drive and was actually pretty impressed. The lag has all but disappeared, it now being no worse than on my 53 plate S60 D5 (i.e. virtually none existent). Also, revs are a lot lower on the motorway - probably due to the addition of the 6th gear on the Geartronic box. I'm guessing that the lag on the earlier cars was due to the lower engine power (163BHP v's 185BHP) and that Volvo have addressed the problem in the newer models with this power increase. If that's the case then probably not much can be done to improve the earlier engines other than a bit of performance tuning perhaps? And yes, you did read correctly - my wife has an '08 XC90 Exec and I have an '03 S60. Anything for a quiet life ;-) |

I don't think it's to do with the power output as I have a 53 plate D5 with the 163 engine and I have no hesitation at pull away at all.
In fact I'd say it pulls away fairly quickly for 2 ton diesel 4x4! |
