Default 850/P1 X70 TDi Remap.

Just wanted to share my experience of having my 850TDi remapped.

I'd looked around at various tuning options for the AEL engine for a while, but never really done anything about it as my 850 is my daily workhorse and as such tends to be left on the back burner.

During this time, I found myself talking to Martin_r_smith on here, who offered his remapping services, for a more than reasonable sum considering the work involved.
Basically, the ECU can't be written to remotely, so has to have sockets fitted to the board, to which Martin then fits his custom written chips.

He is able to tailor a map to suit particular requirements and after a chat, he wrote a map to suit my needs.

I received my ECU back today and the difference is like night and day!
Before, power used to trail off after around 3k revs, but now it just keeps building all the way to the redline.
My map is quite aggressive, coming on boost quite hard, but I think he could tone it down if that was someone's preference.

Anyway, to say I'm made up would be a massive understatement.

Anyone looking for tuning options for the old TDi, definitely give him a shout via PM on here.
Thoroughly decent bloke and a pleasure to deal with.

Cheers,
Steve

There's an 850 derv on ebay at the moment.

I'm tempted myself to go all out on it as I wouldn't need it for work.

I will be sorting one out for my V70 once everything else is sorted on it, as you say, a very knowledgeable guy!

How does it compare to your t5 performance wise,?

Craig.

With mine it was comparable upto 100mph but then the t5 has the legs. 40-70mph the tdi would win every time. But then factor in 45mpg versus 25mpg and you have a clear winner.

^^^^ Pretty much what Martin said. ^^^^

Tricky comparison for me though, as my T5 is auto and far from standard, but the TDi is manual.
The torque of the diesel is more than comparable though and as said is still able to achieve half sensible economy with a lead right foot, whereas the T5 is laughable.

Will definitely be getting my newly working V70 done once shekels are more plentiful. Everyone who gets in comments about how torquey it feels as standard but it still feels a bit slow from the driver's seat.

Can it be mapped to produce peak torque at slightly lower RPM? I currently have enormous turbo lag - no power at all before about 2200rpm. Peak seems to come at about 2900rpm and there's no point going further than about 3500rpm so my morsel of power is there albeit somewhat difficult to utilise when needed.

Think I need to have another look at pump timing too.

They can't be made to produce much more torque below 2200rpm due to the type of turbo. Unlike a modern variable vane turbo these simply don't spool up at such low revs. You have to remember that this is essentially a commercial van engine and therefore it likes to be revved. The other problem is the DMF, it really doesn't appreciate high torque at low revs.

I generally map them for some extra torque in the lower revs but really open them up past 3000 rpm where it's safe for the drive train.
