ETS with brake and accelerator?

Hi All,

First post and first Volvo, and very nice it is too! Been driving SAAB 9000s for the last 20 years. (hope you don't mind me using the "S" word on here).

My current 9000 is laid up for the winter with steering and suspension issues that I don't have the time and money to deal with, and a friend gave me his 1999 V70 auto B5254T. This is my first Volvo, so just learning all the technical stuff, since I do most of my own repairs.

When I got it, the ETS light was on and the tick-over was lumpy with sluggish acceleration. Yellow label ETM, 2001 date code. I modified it with a SACER sensor.

That cured the lumpy tick-over and the acceleration issue and the ETS light was gone.

After 2 days the ETS light came back on. Managed to somehow get it to go off by trying the ETM reset by fiddling with the ignition key. Something like, turn to position 2, wait 30 seconds, turn off, turn on again.

All fine but a day later I caught the ETS light coming on red-handed! I was at a filling station and accidentally pressed the brake and accelerator at the same time. Then I remember that this is what I did two days before. Anyway, cancelled it again by the reset method.

So, after a long story and a lot of waffle, here is my question:

Is it usual for the ETS light to be triggered by pressing the brake and the accelerator at the same time? Is there no brake accelerator inter-lock via the brake pedal position sensor to cancel the accelerator?

Searched the forum but couldn't find anything.

Hello and welcome.

I'm pretty sure the brake has nothing to do with the ETM, but, if you've done the ETM mod to contactless, the next in line could be the accelerator pedal. It works the same way as the ETM did.

Thank you. Its strange that the ETS light came on when I accidentally hit the brake and the accelerator together on two separate occasions. Just wondered if this pointed to a fault or if it always happens.

Follow up. Read somewhere that just for the 1999MY a faulty signal from the brake pedal position sensor will throw the ETS light. I had the light flashing intermittently.

Stripped the sensor and the contacts were unsoldered from the board. (Now resoldered). This means I had two faults causing the ETS warning. The ETM sensor and the brake pedal position switch. All fixed now.

I'm pretty sure the brake has nothing to do with the ETM, but, if you've done the ETM mod to contactless, the next in line could be the accelerator pedal. It works the same way as the ETM did.
