Default Electric seat fault could just been very serious..

Hi,

Just joined this forum as a result of my wife nearly being taken out on the A2 Kent.

I have an xc90 2010. It has electric set driving positions. I’m at position 1 and little legs is position 2. she was just driving along the motor way when the seat started to move back. To the point where she could not reach the pedals. This caused her to have to move into the hard shoulder.

I have taken it out for a drive and it hasn’t done it again but she has lost faith in it. Is this a fault others have come across?

Thanks

Richard

My thoughts:

1. Something pressed the memory switch M1, M2 or M3 that controls the seat and mirrors, or the switch is sticky and stuck on (first choice, and based on your description it must have been the M1 button)
2. Something pressed the switch that moved the seat, or the switch is sticky and stuck on (less likely as these switches are pretty strong, robust switches)
3. The controller is faulty and had a mind of it's own, and decided to move the seat (unlikely)

If you are concerned, remove and disassemble the seat controller, look for signs of liquid / dirt intrusion.
Use contact cleaner on the switches, including the memory switches.
If you find any liquid or dirt contamination, you have likely found your cause.

If you are still concerned, replace the seat controller with a new one

I have never had any problem with this in any of my Volvo XC90s but son had an even worse problem with his Nissan Pathfinder, the drivers seat would randomly move forward while he or his wife were driving trapping them against the steering wheel so they could not control the car at all, it did not go to a preset memory setting but all the way forward and backrest moved fully forward as well.
Nissan denied that there was a safety problem for two years then they recalled the cars to fix this issue.

Check your wiring harness under drivers seat for ant wires that may be shorting out.

Underseat wiring, insulationstripped back, these can be damaged and short out, you have to look very carefully to find and broken wires.

I'd be taking the car straight to Volvo.
