Default 2013 V60 EGR Cleaning Guide

Hi guys,

Been having bother with the EGR valve on my 2013 V60 D4. The engine management light came on and fault code diagnostics pointed at the EGR. Using the computer, the EGR flap was opened and closed a number of times (in the hope it would clear any blockages) which cleared the fault for a while. Today it came back with a warning message saying "Reduced Engine Performance" and a complete loss of power in the car. After starting and stopping the engine I got it going again.

The local Volvo dealer has quoted £500ish for replacement, but i was thinking of doing a clean before replacing the EGR. It is the older 5 cylinder engine according to the dealer. Does anyone have any decent instructions on doing this? Something like a Haynes Manual would give?

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Before doing anything further with the EGR, I would look at the boost pressure sensor. It's on the exit of the intercooler, down at the bottom of the engine bay on the passenger side of the car. These go dodgy quite often, but the fault code points to the EGR.

I didn't experience that with my own 5-cylinder 2.0 BUT I did have one of the DPF pressure sensors fail, which also gave symptoms similar to yours. The fault code was also EGR related, it took 3 trips to the dealer and a brand-new EGR valve fitted under warranty before they found the real fault.

From memory there are two pressure sensors on the DPF, but don't take my word for it

Unfortunately the only reliable test is to swap the sensor, as you can reset the codes and the car will be fine for a few days, then it will throw a code again.
