There's been a development - when the tank was getting low, but nowhere near empty, the car ran very badly, thought he might be walking home! But after struggling to a garage and filling up, it ran normally. So it does sound like a fuel issue.
Latest thing - with 1/2 a tank of fuel it's very slow to start, both hot and cold. But once running it goes fine. So we still think it's a fuel issue, but can't see why it seems to be OK when running but not when cranking.
Any suggestions gratefully received!

There is a lot of information in the FAQ about starting and performance issues.

The fuel relay is another common source of problems, particularly starting, provided all the standard ignition and fuel components have been checked and replaced as necessary.
Where is the fuel relay located please?
