Mac,
I suspect it's a company car, so he won't be able to. I don't know of any employer that pays 11p per mile for private car use on company business - it makes no sense to use anything other than the 45p HRMC rate, as it's a deductible expense anyway. J

I think they did it to put the onus on the employee to claim the difference back from HMRC. BTW, this was a major UK construction company and not some backstreet business |

I'm not disputing it btw, I just can't see how it makes any sense at all? It's a direct recoverable cost, so it lowers their tax bill.

It’s not a company car, I opted out to get the XC a base v60 would have been the best I could manage on the car scheme more likely a V40 to have a decent spec.
That’s by the bye, I will be claiming the difference back from HMRC. We have a backwards car scheme where company car drivers can have fuel benefit and pay the extra tax or (as I was) be billed for private mileage the A4 I had was costing me 11p a mile but using around 10p! As I opted out I have a car allowance now, so reclaim fuel at the hmrc rates, we are not encouraged to reclaim the difference from hmrc (no idea why) |

that explains the rate they give you though HDAV - you get an allowance instead of the company car itself.

Yes and that is supposed to cover the fuel costs.... the allowance doesn’t cover he rest of the costs but that’s what you get for wanting a Volvo in a world obsessed with Audi and bmw

XC60 lux nav
My XC60 lux nav of over 55,000 on the clock is averaging 40mpg. On few occasions I've achieved over 50mpg. Tyre pressures are set to eco and I'm always on active cruise control. I do about 70% motorways.

I just don't get why an employer would do that when it's a direct recoverable expense with an HMRC set level already.
