Default very hot engine

Hi, I have a 1998 V70, 2.5 auto.Having driven 40 odd miles this morning I noticed the water temperature gauge was still on cold. Upon stopping the engine the fan was going full blast and the engine was very hot. There are no water leaks and the water level is fine. I would very much appreciate opinions please. thanks jack

Were the coolant pipes to and from the radiator hot too? If so, it simply sounds like a temperature sender fault to me, but if not then a stuck thermostat - although I can't see how a thermostat stuck shut would cause the temperature guage to show cold???

The temperature sensor or wiring to it broken , the ECU cannot get a valid reading so switches the fans on for safety ..

I would start by removing and testing the thermostat and temp. sensor, or even just replacing them, not expensive, check wiring to sensor while you're at it...

Hi guys, many thanks for your help. Would a faulty temp sensor or broken wire cause the temp gauge to remain on cold all the time. thanks jack.

rotted wire probably near the sender as it gets very hot there , Or the sender itself , although I have never seen a sender fail that way before , So have a look at the wire coming from the sender , there is a plug there too and see if the wire is flimsy or broken .
