Default MOT passed - one unwelcome advisory.

A sigh of relief today for another year's MOT passed, but one advisory I could have done without - 'Centre rear - subframe corroded'. Nothing serious apparently, but they wouldn't let me under the lift to have a look for myself to view the damaged area. Wish I had access to a lift as I'm a bit old and creaky for groveling around underneath cars. I'm guessing that replacing the subframe if/when it becomes necessary isn't a quick Saturday morning job. Any thoughts?

Not sure what age your car is but it is common on older XC90 and other P2 models. The rear subframe seems poorly protected, but it is very well engineered so once the corrosion sets in, it can be many years before the structural strength of it as affected. I had a 2003 XC90 which I bought in 2014 and it was first advised in 2012, that car was last MOT'd in April 23 and still an advisory.

If you were minded to keep the car a long time you could get it in to somewhere for steam cleaning and some form of protection applied.

I will be applying some rust protection under my V70 in the spring. I've had a short look for far and the one thing that I noticed of significance was the centre of the anti roll bar had lost its powder coating and was rusting so that will definitely need protecting.

I'll be using Neutrarust 661® Rust Converter & Primer following by Bilt Hamber Dynax UC Anti-Corrosion Wax.

The Neutrarust 661 is fantastic, it is one of those products that converts any residual rust to a black chemical of some sort but it also has a clear primer 'lacquer' in it so actually coats the metal as well as converting the rust.

I may also apply a zinc rich primer as well after the Neutrarust, depends on how carried away I get.

Prevention better than later expensive fix is my thought.

If your subframe is still sound I would get it off and get it Galvanised , Job done! Quicker and cheaper in the long run if you are keeping the car. volvo should have done that in the first place rather just paint it Black like Ford do.. I have been trying to preserve old cars for decades with these paints and treatments you brush on, all ok for a few years then you are back to square one sooner or later. You don't have access to the inside of tubes and hidden places like hot Zinc has. I did my 340 front crossmember and arms last year

Thanks folks. Unless I can get access to a lift locally any work to treat the rust will have to be delegated to someone who has. My local independent is helpful but not sure if they'd be up for doing it. Getting the subframe galvanised would best of course, but I'm not sure I could justify the cost. Much as we love the car I've a feeling things are going to have to change in a couple of years maximum.

I wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage. My Brother's car (Vauxhall Insignia) just had an advisory for sub frame rust on the front and rear. The MOT tester said the car will likely be long gone before its a problem!

You don't necessarily need a lift to do this. If you have high enough ramps, or get someone that does, its doable with those. It can be quite a messy job though, so cover the floor (if doing it at home). I wouldn't go spending a fortune on it either, unless you plan on keeping the car long term
