Which engine?
Hi All,
I'm a newcomer here. I'm very seriously considering an XC60 to replace my Audi A6 Avant. Have always loved the looks of the XC60, and having test driven an Evoque, I wasn't as 'blown away' as the looks suggest, plus I think an XC60 will probably last me longer. I want AWD (don't want to be embarrassed in the snow like I was when I couldn't get my Audi up the small lip of the pavement onto my drive!), but can't decide between D5 or D3. Is there that much real world difference between them, what are people's experiences? I'm guessing mpg won't be an issue as my A6 averages 25.8 according to the on board computer (ouch). The boy racer that is still in me somewhere says D5 but the 38 year old dad of 2 in me says get a D3 as it will very similar day to day and save a couple of grand. Any thoughts, opinions or experiences will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Dave |

From the figures people have been posting on here it doesn't sound as though there is much difference in mpg on either the D3 or D5 if you opt for the AWD option on the D3 (D5 AWD is standard of course).
D3 FWD appears to be around 15-20% better on fuel. AWD is more desirable for anybody buying second hand but, ironically, you get lower %age depreciation on the D3 FWD. Depends on how long you intend keeping the car of course. |

I would say go for the D5 (but then i may be a little biast)
Haven't driven D3 in the XC60 but have in the V50 and it shifts most on here say the D3 does a good job and should return better fuel economy. D5 will always win at the traffic lights though

I test drove a D3 Drive this afternoon. Whilst I think that I will ultimately go for the D3 AWD, I was impresssed with the performance. I was expecting it to be a bit sluggish, but it wasn't, and the in-gear exceleration was plenty for 95% of occasions.
I very nearly agreed to buy a Saville Grey D3 AWS SE Lux stock car with a £4k discount. Good deal and probably could have got and £1k off, but just not the right time. Oh the dangers of just going look!!!! |

I think the engine depends the use the car is being put to .If its used regularly for motorway use go for the D5. BUT the D3 is more than adequate for the A& B roads in the UK and in my opinion is bordering on being a license looser even in D3 guise. I am constantly throttling back to keep within speed limits with my D3. |

I have driven a selection of XC60s over the last year, including D3 and D5,
Manual, Auto, AWD and 2 wheel. I found very little difference with regards to fuel consumption between the D3 and the D5, however I did notice a fair bit of difference with regards to acceleration the D5 being more impressive. The D3 model I'm referring to was the DrivE model. I now own a MY12 D5 AWD Auto and have no regrets. The improvements with the engine seem noticeable unless its just my imagination. In conclusion I do not think you would be disappointed with either model, but I would suggest the D5 is worth that few extra quid ! |

I am in totally agreement, if the Budget allows it go for the D5 everytime with its twin sequential turbo.

I'm a 39 yr old Dad of one, with another one arriving very shortly. Go for the D5 and polestar, the extra cash outlay will pay dividends and make you smile every time you put your foot down.
