Default Taking the sound system out of a 2001 C70

Hi all

I want to take the complete sound system out of a 2001 C70 convertible.

It has the SC901 head unit, centre speaker on the dash, speakers in front doors and behind rear seats, and I think an amp in the boot.

I am not where the car is right now. Is there anything under the front seats?

As well as those components, what wiring (looms) do I need to take out, to be able transfer to a standard phase 1 V70?

Thanks
Steve

The complete dash top with centre speaker will be a straight swap, make sure you get the wire between the centre speaker and sc901. Also the dash tweeters will be a straight swap as well.

The head unit will be a straight swap but you will need an amp as it doesn't have an internal one for the main speakers. The C70 boot amp & wiring is very different from the S/V70. You could buy adaptors and wiring kit and then fit any aftermarket amp you want but this is obviously more work. If you can find one then you could fit the smaller 4x50w amp and harness that lives under/behind the head unit or there was a different amp under the driver's seat with harness - either of those 2 would be plug and play.

The V70 door speakers are 6.5 inch and afaik you will only get 1 pair of that size out of a convertible C70.

Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention but you will obviously want the Dolby processor. It's a smallish grey box with a single din cable which just plugs into the back of the SC901. The dolby options on the head unit won't work without it.

Is it worth rescuing secondhand speakers out of the front doors, or would it be better to just fit 6.5" new speakers (aftermarket)?

The reason I ask is that both of my V70s have the same problem of dropout (or more accurately, occasional drop-in!) on the front passenger speaker. Naturally, I assumed that this was down to a wiring fault at the connector or near the A-post, but when I measured the speaker units themselves, both have the same problem of a dry-joint somewhere around the speaker itself - it isn't clear where - as I can get the units to go open-circuit by tapping them. The speakers are both the genuine factory-fit Volvo items, so it stands to reason that the quality of these is not all it might be hoped-for.

Hi SwedishBus,

Thanks. Have you looked into sources and prices of aftermarket speakers that would be suitable?

I have some spare secondhand, but can you let us know what you find?

Steve

Hi Steve,
Yes, I'll let you know. The biggest issue, as I can see right now, is getting a speaker mount that replicates the Volvo 4 legs. That is why I put the speaker back in again, after "fixing it" on the TDI, only for it to drop out after 3miles. On a 1350mile journey.........damn........

You can buy adaptors that use the volvo door mounts and will then let you screw in any 6.5inch speaker. Plenty on ebay - looks to be about £40 to do all 4 doors (front & rear are different).
